Just went through this with our 15 year old Golden. Very rough. Helped to get her ashes, locks of hair and paw/nose prints. Definitely sucks. Like losing a family member.

My black Lab, one of four dogs, is pretty gray and getting on. They are special companions. Just love her and be loved by her until it's time. Sorry.

I am very sorry for you. But, you're doing this right. You'll miss her when it's over, but you'll be glad you with her when she needed you most.

I got a 15 year old. Lost hearing about 6 months ago now within the last month cataracts have gotten so bad he is completely blind. The only joy he gets is somebody physically touching him. Other than that, all he does is lay around. It's getting tough

I’m sorry to hear this. I lost my first lab on my 18th bday. He was 13 and the best guy ever. Went everywhere with him and stayed up with him until he passed around 4am. Beautiful animals. All they want to do is be your best friend.

Very sorry. Once the dog passes, take some time to mourn your loss then go get a new puppy. They are truly great friends.

We rescued an older border collie (former farm dog) - blind in one eye (raccoon fight) and cataracts in the other. He doesn't see very well. He had never been inside but it took him one day to adapt to home life.

He loves attention and enjoys going out but he tends to get disoriented as to where he is when he's out in a pasture.

He does not have any evident health issues but I have the feeling that he isn't going to be around next year.

Higgysmalls,

Make sure he hasn't lost his sense of smell. Does he respond to the smell of his favorite food? If now, can you add fish oil or beef fat or something fragrant to it?

With a loss of appetite, more things can go wrong as our pets get weaker and weaker.

Good luck

He can't stand the vet. And he's still 140lbs skin and bones. So it'll fall on me when the time comes for him to go.

We found a vet that will come to your house, we didn’t have to take our lab to the vet when it was time.

My chocolate is almost 15, had her since 10 weeks old. Not a day goes by I don't think about how close she's got to be, but am also thankful for all the years and the fact she's met my two young kids.

Went through this exact thing in summer of 2018. Also a black lab. Also our first “kid”. Also just wanted to be by our side til the end.

That shite wrecked me. Prayers for you and your family.

it's tough. I've had labs all my life and everytime one gets old and starts really slowing down I dread having to make the hard decision to have them euthanized. They get to a point where it has to be done for them but it is gut wrenching. I always have a couple labs, it helps me get over it better when I lose 1.
