Dog flea and heartworm meds
We recently got a dog from local humane society and wanted to know everyone's opinion on the best/most affordable flea and heartworm treatment.

There are so many options out there now I am am not sure which way to go. Not sure if some of the combo pills(trifexis or sentinel) are the best all around or better to treat with separate meds for each condition like Bravecto which vet recommended.

Heartgard is great but hard to find these days. It's chewable and is supposed to be beef flavor so they think it's a treat.

Heartgard for sure. You can probably order it online. It's the easiest medicine to give to dogs since they think it's a treat like Bestbank said.

If you don't have a collie, you can use Ivermectin for heartworms, which is dirt cheap. Ivermectin is the ingredient in Heartguard, and if you dose it yourself using the Ivermectin for sheep (cheap at a feed store), you'll save a ton of money.

My sister has around 60 foxhounds and she spends less for heartworm control than I do with a Border Collie and an Aussie.

Collies can be ivermectin sensitive.

Here's a link that explains it all:

Definitely Bravecto for fleas. It's kinda expensive ($60/12 weeks for my Lab) but worth it.

We use this. I have a shiba inu and use the 25lb dose. About 80 bucks a year and he eats it just like it's a treat. Only meds that he would actually take. Trifexus (spelling?) is good, but it's much more expensive and my dog is inside 95% of the time, so I've never had a flea problem.

Look beyond heartworm flea coverage. Some treat intestinal worms such as rounds hooks and whips. If you take your dog out a lot to parks or around where exposure to wildlife Trifexis may be the best one. It smells awful though.

We use Pro Heart 6 month shot for heart worms and Comfortis oral for fleas once a month and have never had any problems. I've been doing this for multiple dogs for more than 5 years.

Mine gets a shot every 6 months, about 110 for heartworms and fleas. I honestly dont know the name.

He was on heartgard. We were happy with that as well

I would recommend Proheat 6, the 6 month shot for heartworms and Bravecto, the 3 month pill for fleas. Not the cheapest route but much less chance for missed doses. Drug Co. research shows that of people that claim to give monthly doses always on time have a purchase history of only 9 a year. You don't want to mess with heartworms.

If your dog is not around dirt a lot, then chances of worms is extremely low. Even if they get them, they are also easily treatable unlike heart worms. My dog is inside all day except for 2 walks. No point in paying extra for that in my situation.

This is what we use after one of the liquid ones failed. It's expensive but has worked really well.

Dont' remember what it's called, but we get the brand they sell at Sams Club. Cheaper than heartgard.

Bravecto for fleas and ticks. Only have to give 1x every 90 days. If you go this route, you must give a separate heartworm medicine, such as HeartGard (about $22 for 6 month supply).

Trifexis for fleas, heartworms and internal parasites (all-in-one pill) given monthly.

Your local vet will charge about $90 for a two pack (large dog dosage) and for Trifexis about $120 - $130 for a 6 month supply.

Online, you can find Bravecto for $60 and Trifexis for $85 ... but you must get them from Australia. Shipping takes about two weeks to get in, so plan accordingly. The web site is called Pet-i-Supply dot com. I've used them for years and their legitimate as they come.
