It bothers me if we are in the office or some other setting where you probably should have your phone on silent.

My grandma's text tone is legit 10 seconds long. I laugh every time she gets a text when I'm there. I think she used an alarm sound instead of a short text one.

You sound like a college aged chick. Jenny got arrested two states away, it's an emergency!

You're not going to do shite in a medical emergency. If they can call you, it's not an emergency anyway. Someone that just had a stroke typically can't do anything like dial a phone. If you're on their next of kin list, the hospital will call you.

And you sound like a selfish child. Me, I'm older with elderly parents. I know my time with them is limited. I would want to know if they were in trouble.

Sure I am. It's called praying. You should try it sometime.

People should just get a smart watch. I barely touch my phone on a daily basis for like 5 years now.

This is the answer. My phone hasn't rang outside of the house on loud in a decade. Only situation is the rare occasion the wife goes to work before me and I turn it on loud while I'm sleeping in case there is a problem.

But in public it is going to my watch or my phone stays on silent and I'll get it it when I get to it.

This is why I am not a fan of group texts so often. But nothing comes close to the notification sounds full blast on older people's phones

Amazing how people jump on boomers right away. I walk in store and young peeps all on FaceTime all talking loud at the register holding up lines, getting an associate to help them while they are on the phone. Us boomers drop calls quick like if someone is helping us.

They're elderly. They're at risk, right now, as you whine. And you pray for them every day I presume.

If they are in danger, and they're calling you, and not 911, they are decreasing their chances of survival.

I have brothers and sisters you know. They also have phones.

Look be as selfish as you want. I don't care. Don't feel like you have to justify your behavior to me. All I was doing is pointing out a case where it might be better if your phone wasn't on silent. A case where I'm glad my phone isn't.

And honestly, the attitude in this tread that answering your phone is somehow beneath folks comes off like a bit of a superiority complex. Like whatever it is you’re doing is just too important to be bothered by other people. In most cases, that’s just not true.

Get a smart watch. Or, since life is so precarious, never leave your phone off of your person when you are in public.

You are blending your one use case against the vast, vast majority of people that exhibit behavior described in the OP. Were they in fear of emergencies, they wouldn't just let their phone ding/ring incessantly, would they?

Most cases my arse. My two friends have sent 28 text messages in a conversation in the last 45 minutes. Ring has buzzed me 19 times to let me know someone is at the door this morning. Were I in public, and my phone not on vibrate, the cashier at H-E-B probably would have choked me out for being an annoying a-hole. It's about consideration of others. You can be selfish with your use case. I am perfectly content to be informed a friend's dad was dying while my phone was on vibrate. At home. I somehow managed to take the call. Small miracles, I guess.

Anyone with their phone on loud in public that's not waiting for a very important call or text is just an a-hole. Silent and vibrate 99.9% of the time and I've never missed anything that couldn't wait.

I think people have grown numb to constant communications and instant contact. I am like that. Constant notfications irratate me.

I hate this. People need to learn something called patience. I know people that call one line and then call another line if you don't answer and this is for non emergency stuff. I under stand if a loved one has passed or if something is really going down, but not something that can wait.

They’ll usually get the hint when you join into their conversation.
