Athletes generate millions of dollars. Teachers do not.
I don’t get how that’s a hard concept for people to understand. Also weird how it seems to be mostly athletes that get brought up when talking about getting overpaid. People don’t talk about musicians and actors. They’re not quite the same but they’re all entertainers in a sense.

No it doesn’t bother me at all. Pro athletes have a shelf life and tenure allows lazy teachers to permeate the school system until retirement without regard. It’s BS.

For some reason there is a large contingent of people who do not understand getting paid for what you produce

Stop having conversations with people. That's your biggest problem.

no.... i do think teachers should be paid more, with a little more responsibility placed on their performance, as well, however, it's all about supply and demand...
demand for pro athletes is high, and supply is low... conversely, demand for teachers is relatively low compared to the possible supply, considering pretty much anyone can be a teacher, while not just anyone can become a pro athlete...

It's not. Have a master teacher system thatevaluates teachers the same as student teachers are evaluated. Lesson plans, classroom management, etc. It also gives teachers a promotion track.

Why would that be?
the vast majority of Americans are compensated based on merit yet somehow zero government employees are, hmmmm.

Most government employees are very overpaid, especially if you factor in benefits
I don't know about overpaid, but there's a superintendent for the highschools out here in Vegas who makes over $200k a year.
My brother and brother in law are metro cops and they make over $100k.
We looked on the county website to see how much they were actually "paid", and factoring in all their benefits, it was around $130k-$140k

no....It bothers me that pro athletes get paid more than healthcare providers. lol

Nope.
Doesn't bother me if college athletes get paid more than teachers, either.

Pro athletes work way harder than teachers.

The pay of professional athletes is quite ridiculous, and so is the pay for teachers.

Not it’s not. You could say that people’s obsession with sports is ridiculous.

Truest statement in this thread. And when it comes to what pro athletes make it always gets compared to teachers (or other public service jobs).
Teachers are important, especially elementary teachers, but when someone decides to become a teacher they know what they are getting into. If you want to make more than a teacher’s salary then go into something else.
Teachers don’t generate money, it’s that simple so when they get raises that money has to come from somewhere.
There is always that person who says something like “think about it. All they do is play a game” & you can’t change that person’s mind, but some people really do get pissed about that idea.

No. I taught inner city public school for 22 years (BR). I now do construction ,it is much more rewarding. When inner city high school kids tell you that jobs are for losers your mindset changes. I now believe that all public school teacher's salaries should be reduced by 90%. In fact, most of public school is a waste of tax dollars. I also think minimum wage should be done away with too. Competition is a good thing.
