Then explain to him that Death Valley is close to 300 ft. BELOW sea level and is considered one of the hottest places on Earth and let his brain explode.

It's not that, but in the highest mountains the thinner atmosphere makes for more extreme temperatures. On Everest it can be 90 during the day and below zero at night.

By the same token, the early space craft had to be rotated periodically because the side facing the sun would be broiling while the other side was frigid. They called it "barbecuing." IDK if they still do it or if they've come up with a better solution.

No, but Guam may tip over soon with all those buildings, so if the water is cool, you’d be cooler.

That's because they were outside the atmosphere I'm assuming...
