It's not that, but in the highest mountains the thinner atmosphere makes for more extreme temperatures. On Everest it can be 90 during the day and below zero at night.
By the same token, the early space craft had to be rotated periodically because the side facing the sun would be broiling while the other side was frigid. They called it "barbecuing." IDK if they still do it or if they've come up with a better solution.

That's because they were outside the atmosphere I'm assuming...
