So what about these bean pole people who eat poboys and burgers all day but never put on a pound?
Some people do have faster metabolisms than others, but I think it’s range is +/- 300.
Exercising can increase metabolism too.
The reality is that bean pole people who seemingly eat whatever they want aren’t eating as much as you think.
They skip breakfast or don’t snack or avoid desserts. You just don’t realize it.

Not always. I know a dude who literally eats roast beef poboys for breakfast. Dude is so skinny he could blow away in the wind.

As surprising as it sounds, skinny people are more active than fat people.
Above-mentioned poboy eater has not excercised in like 20 years. Office job too.

You sure are acting like you know a little about this guy, he your boyfriend or something?
He may eat that, but what if he goes home and push mows his yard every week or works on motors or some shite? If he isn't gaining weight the fact is he's eating less calories than he's burning and metabolism alone doesn't make that big of a difference.
You can yell and scream about the 1 guy you know, but your one questionable anecdote doesn't change anything.

Unless the person is going through a real rut, His net calorie intake is probably not going to vary more than 10% from high to low end of spectrum.

Worked with a guy at the plant who would come to work with McDonald's for breakfast ( 2 saugage McMuffins), ,get a styrofoam daily special every day(fried chicken, meatloaf,Mac and cheese type stuff), & have 2 bags of hot fries & a bag of Skittles as snacks.....not to mention 3 cans of coke. Dude could be cast as the new JJ Evans if they did a Good Times remake. He got fired after he was caught sleeping on the job....three separate times.
He was at around 3,000 calories from just the time that I could see. But of course he could have run 26 miles after work each day and drank nothing but water.... calories in calories out....amiright?

Generally speaking most people have a natural set point with regard to weight.
That set point is based on genetics.
That set point also doesn’t matter. You decide what you want to look like by what you put in your mouth.

There's a "that's what she said" somewhere in this post

This. This documentary is a good one explaining it. Basically follows two "naturally thin" people around and proves that they skip meals without realizing it, eat low calorie meals sometimes without realizing it, and are more active than overweight people. A lot of people do intermittent fasting without even knowing it is a thing that exists.

For a complete guess, this seems like a pretty good description. Never thought of it this way, but seems logical.

That’s more of a default number of calories that you consume when not paying attention.
If you had a default weight, then your metabolism would adjust no matter what you ate.
In a sense, we may be inclined to plateau at a certain weight. However, that is solely dependent upon default diet and exercise habits.

I was reading somewhere that fat cells don't leave the body for 1-2 years, they just shrink to lose weight before they are lost. I would assume that means that until you get rid of those fat cells for good, it is easier to gain back weight
If you drop from 220 to 175 then eat and stay active like a 175lb person, you will stay at 175lb
You can't eat and sit on the couch like a 220lb person and not expect to balloon to 220lb

Holy frick this thread is embarrassing. No wonder why 70% of Americans are fricking fat.
All of you should take the time to learn how basic nutrition works. Some straight up Reddit.com/r/fatlogic takes in here.
Calories in, Calories out. It’s LITERALLY fricking scientifically proven.

what is starvation mode and is it the same for all?

I’m pretty sure it just comes down to carlorie intake vs. calories burned. The more you weigh the more calories you burn just by being alive, so at a certain point you’ll quit gaining weight.
I've got a theory with with no actual facts backing it up that some people don't process all the calories they take in which is why you have some of those random outliers mentioned in this thread. I have definitely known more than a few folks that seem like they violate the laws of thermodynamics.

You sound angry. Do you eat because you're unhappy or are you unhappy because you eat?

It's slightly more complicated than that when you account for hormones and body reactions to sugars....

Yes everyone has a set point weight. Your body will adjust to keep that weight.
Calories in vs out can affect your weight short term. But unless you reset the set point you will slowly creep back to your original weight.
People fail to account that their BMR is not a static number. If you overeat for a few days your body will increase your BMR to burn more calories in attempt to stay near your set point. Same goes for undereating, your BMR will slow down calorie burning.
Set point is determined by your hormones. Insulin being the most responsible.
If your hormones are out of normal forget about losing weight. Ex. hypothyroid, insulin resistance, etc.
To reset the set point you need to reach your goal weight and maintain it for approx 1yr.
Fasting is the best way to help your body reset and it will not slow down your metabolism. 16:8 or one meal a day work very well. Combine with keto and weight will fall off. You just have to keep it there until your body decides this is the new weight it will defend.

You make your own default body weight. When you maintain the same diet and the same energy expulsion.
it really is about calories in and calories burned.
if you continue to do less and less activities and eat the same you will continue to gain weight and vice versa.
If i just eat what I want even if I continue to exercise I would gain 50lbs in 6 months. I can't stop eating.

Actually, metabolism can play huge role.
The really skinny people who can eat half a horse every day often have a version of hyperthyroidism.
Genetics is huge too.
I work out like a maniac to stay in the 220-225 range. Problem for me is I lift weights vs 1.5 hours of cardio. So I stay beefy.
But everyone else in my family is 265-350 lbs.
Im the skinny one. Ha!
The general concept is true. Exercise more than you consume. But dont underplay genetics and thyroid issues.
