Does everyone's body have a default weight?

Ie if you do nothing you will default to X weight +/- 7 lbs.

Example: guy weighs 200 lbs.

He diets and excercises for 6 months and drops to 175.

He falls off the wagon, doesn't excercise, eats garbage and within only 2 months balloons back to 200.

However, for the next 10 months he continues to eat like shite and not work out.....and he still weighs 200 lbs.

My question is what allows him to baloon the 25 in 2 months, but then turns around and keeps him from going to 300 lbs (10 months at 25 lbs per every 2 month diet he had when he ballooned)

What is keeping him at 200?

Complete guess:

At 200lbs, his fat self burns 2500 calories a day because that's what it takes to move around his fat self

At 175lbs, his body only needs 2000 calories a day because it takes his body less energy since he is smaller

So if he eats 2500 a day at 175 lbs, he will gain weight until he reaches his 200lb fat self
Again

Maintenance calories, which varies based on metabolism, activity and person. You routinely go below whatever your maintenance calories are and you’ll lose weight, go above and you’ll gain weight

Not possible. If you eat at a deficit, you will lose weight over time. If you eat at a surplus, you will gain weight over time. You are not special. You are not magic. You do not defy science.

If you think you are dieting but you are not losing weight, you don't math well and/or you are lying to yourself about your consumption (i.e. not measuring/weighing things, not counting calorie dense things like oils and butter and dressings, etc).

You can eat pizza every single day and stay the same weight. As long as you are not eating more calories in pizza than your body needs to maintain.

I’m pretty sure it just comes down to carlorie intake vs. calories burned. The more you weigh the more calories you burn just by being alive, so at a certain point you’ll quit gaining weight.

Now everyone does have default frame and genetics that causes differences in metabolism and things. But that can be overcame with will power, yet that’s genetic too I guess?

Tldr: Yes and No

The problem with her post is the op never mentioned deficit/surplus....

So the OP absolutely did post a plausible scenario

Touche. Good catch.

I just figured the incorrect interpretation of setpoint was his implication. But yes, if "eating like garbage" doesn't imply a surplus, then OP did post a plausible scenario.

While lots of factors, your thyroid really can cause big shifts.

When my thyroid went out I put on like 80 lbs in less than a year. Since then I have dropped about 10 lbs. a year for the past 6 years but it has been a real struggle as I now eat 1/3 to 1/2 of what I used to eat and can still gain weight.

I have a range I’ve been in my entire adult life. It’s a 10-15lb swing depending on whether I’m eating like shite, not eating and skipping meals or eating well and staying healthy. Whatever it is I never go below a certian weight and I can never get above a certian weight.

However my body fat and muscle mass will fluctuate quite a bit.

My last body test a month ago my BMI was at 23, body fat at 13.8 and muscle mass at 80.

This just goes to show that weight is caused by genetics and not what you eat

Agreed. It's why I look at people of heft on scooters with empathy. Filling up the front basket isn't the cause, it's the symptom. Symptom of internal agony and depression.

So what about these bean pole people who eat poboys and burgers all day but never put on a pound?

As surprising as it sounds, skinny people are more active than fat people.
