Does anything sum up New Orleans in 2018 more than what I saw yesterday?

I pulled into the gas station on the corner of Rampart and St. Louis to fill up DaBossmobile, and about 8 feet to the right of my pump was a belligerent crackhead (who just so happened to be black) in handcuffs by a white police officer. I couldn’t understand a word of the crackhead’s incoherent rant, but he rambled on the whole time I was filling up. To the left of the pump was a white couple with dreads that looked like they hadn’t showered in a month, sitting in a beat up 92 Corolla with looks of silent rage on their faces, both filming every second. The police officer remained completely silent the whole time; he looked to be about in his late 50’s, and he just had this stone faced, done with it, defeated look on his face, most likely thinking “I don’t think I can make it three more months to retirement...”

Did I witness peak 2018 New Orleans yesterday?

That sounds like something you would see in any major city in the US.

I think I would have had to start filming the white people just to get their reactions.

No. You witnessed a police officer doing his thankless job. Sounds like he was being very professional and compassionate

NOPD although they have issues, are some of the best in the country.

You should have been there this weekend when a garbage truck crashed into a street car on Canal.

Eh. I will give them this. They are the best in the world at crowd control when that crowd is full of people who are absolutely out of their minds on alcohol/whatever drugs. They are also great at knowing when to let things just go because the person is no real danger to anyone and when to actually bust your arse. So many cops in other cities act like hardasses where as NOPD knows when to pick their battles.

Last time I stopped there a bum came up to me and asked me for ten dollars.

I was a bit impressed with his ambition. Aim high.

He should have spent an extra fiddy cent and sprayed a little gas on the camera man.
