Don't forget that hole in the ozone caused by hairspray that's going to kill us all.

It was all bullshite. The dates were never coded that way. They might have had 6 computers left in the world in 1999 that used "double digit date codes that would reset in time" because even the ones that had it, were smart enough to know 00 meant 2000

Y2K ended up being nothing because there was a lot of reprogramming getting done.

The entire thing was horseshite. The dates didnt need to be 4 digits. The computers knew after 1999 it was 2000, it wasnt going to suddenly reverse onboard clock time

Were there any posters here that worked to "fix the date program" on any system?

Btw not a SINGLE PROBLEM was reported. So we are to believe the entire world fixed every single computer in 1999 before Dec 31

Before that was the next ice age. Then global warming. We had 5 or 6 chicken flu's. The media told me we will run out of gas by 2030.

Wait until we get closer to 2038, that's the next timeout problem waiting in the wings.

I graduated in IT from LSU on 5/00. I should have taken more summer classes and bumped that up a semester or two

This is what you call the preparedness paradox.

The date issue was a real issue. We actually still have an "end of time" issue which will occur January 19, 2038.

But, as with y2k, we will solve this and move on. Only people like you who suffer from the dunning kruger effect will think it was a hoax.

Using the "Weekly World News" in your argument of media hysteria is not a fair choice.

Their headlines often would range anywhere from "Bigfoot kidnapped my wife" to "Aliens are living in my backyard"

I was part of a team that coordinated the effort for the electric utility industry. A lot of really good, hard work was done to prevent your lights from going out. Developed into a model industry-wide framework for coordinated public-private effort on security issues that continues today.

And even if it did, why would it matter? A computer doesn’t think “I don’t exist in 1900, I must delete myself”

I lost associates over this shite. They couldn't understand why I wouldn't go in on a barge full of grains.

Telling people they are wrong pisses them off for some reason. Reminds me of the mask fiasco.

it wasnt.

computers have an onboard clock that everything is based on.

It counts in cycles.

Hitting 00 would mean 2000 to 99% of all computers at the time. Those computing cycles weren't just going to start counting in reverse, suddenly

Having 2 digit date codes made frick off of a difference. The argument was it was assuming "19xx" but it wasnt in 99.9999% of cases TBH it was likely a government money laundering scheme.

It was definitely the first internet social media disaster. Things have worsened from there.
