The world has gotten safer throughout history pretty consistently, not just America. Some hiccups here and there.
But people like being scared by the boogeyman and it sells advertisements on your local news.
Watch OT topics. People take a few stories and apply it to macro events involving millions of people all the time.

Why single out Trump on this? Every single democrat politician uses horrible crime rates to scare folks into wanting gun control and shite. TD has the, "wait a sec, crime rates are lower!" conversation once a week because of some politician using scare tactics.

I heard a story on this on NPR not too long ago. Their take was that crime is not really decreasing but that police departments are now under reporting crime to make their numbers look better.
