It's actually more or less to tell someone where you grew up. So Bro. Martin for the most part identified that you probably grew up in the Lakefront areas like Lakeview, Lake Vista/ Terrace , UNO, Gentilly and some in NO East. Holy Cross was the school where a lot of working class kids from the 9th ward, Chalmette, NoEast and Algiers went. Jesuit was Mid City, Broadmoor and part of uptown with a healthy dose of Metairie guys . DeLaSalle tended to be Uptown guys as well as parts of the Westbank and River Ridge area.
If you were a white kid growing up there before the 2000's it was a way of identifying where you grew up and who you were most likely to know. NOLA when you get down to it is a small burgh, we tend to know each other. Before the mid 1960's all you had was Orleans Parish and these distinctions from a neighborhood thing was much more pronounced.
BTW if you graduated from any Catholic HS in the New Orleans area you more likely than not were going to college.

There’s a guy in Baton Rouge, been doing this for years, but he goes around Siegan, Bluebonnet, Jefferson, etc, and pulls up to people in a decent looking car, with good business attire, and asks people if they can give him money for gas because he forgot his wallet in NOLA, or some BS. Well he tries to do small talk before he asks the question, and he always says he’s from De La Salle.
