Their waddling is part of the process by which they send out shockwaves, and then detect earthworms.
Once they get a hit, they stop and drill down with their beaks and pull out the worm. They do almost all of this at night, including their migration. They mostly just sleep during the day.
Their diet being like 100% earthworms, their shite looks like a splash of explosive diarrhea.
Thanks for the explanation. I gotta be honest, it's hard for me to see how evolution allowed this little bird to happen. Seems like they'd be easy prey.

frickers scare the hell out of me multiple times throughout hunting season.
This right here; they cause an adrenalin rush for sure. I just built a pond in the wet valley where I always jumped them on the way to camp, so I'm not sure if they will be back.

Yep. They nest on the ground. Ants and other critters get to the eggs and hatchlings pretty quickly.

How about those fast running, injury faking Killdeer birds? They remind me of soccer players.

Hear them more often than I see them. We probably have more marsh hens

I used to hunt them while grouse hunting in Wisconsin. They flay so crazy when flushed you have to be quick. They won’t fly far and if you miss just wait to see where they land and flush them again. I had one that I missed 4 times before finally flushing it again and hitting it.
I’ve had them flush 15 feet in front of me and fly straight towards my gun barrel.
Not a lot of meat, but I would take the breasts and make something similar to a pate and spread it on toast. Pretty good eating,

Pinocchio struggled with this issue.

The area around Amite is the largest wintering area for woodcock in the US, we used to hunt them there. Hard little buggers to hit, but good eating.

That’s usually my go to for duck and dove. Woodcock have an earthy flavor that is tonics to savor on its own.

It’s a rhetorical question Farley!

If so, what is wrong with those MFers? Can they just not walk or fly like a normal bird? Is it really necessary for them to dance everywhere they go like a bunch of a-holes?
Screw aliens, these are the real questions in life that we need answers to.
Had one at Rules in London.

Woodcocks most definitely march to their own drummer. They fly that was too.

Maybe they're just full of soul?
