Does anyone else remember such a huge national news presence for a tropical storm?

I grew up in an area that got hit by hurricanes quite a few times during my childhood and even more tropical storms. I never once remember there being a panic over tropical storms. Most people would be pissed because they knew that meant they would have to replace a couple boards on their piers. This morning my wife(no pic) is watching the news while getting dressed and they act like Katrina is barreling down on the east coast. Has their coverage of storms just gotten more and more ludicrous over the years?

Fear is their greatest tool

Ya, it's called 24 hour news.
See: CNN, Fox, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.

The ABC 5:30PM worldwide news is especially guilty of this. David Muir makes it sound like Armageddon is coming anytime a named storm hits land

Not sure I’ve heard a single thing about this storm other than the week old thread on the OT.
Couldn’t even tell you what area it’s going to hit.

Fear porn should be outlawed.

What?
9/11 is absolutely responsible for the scrolling bottom ticker and the constant need for “BREAKING NEWS” banners after every commercial break. It was the birth of the true 24/7 news cycle.

The media makes it a big deal when the mid Atlantic gets hit because it’s relatively rare.

The panic/chaos media. I think it's the cause of much these problems today. Media creates a false view of what is actually happening, hoping for better ratings and pushing left ideology.

I haven't really either.
Last night was the first night I watched the news in over a week though. They mentioned it, but I was in the other room focusing on something else so didn't really pay attention.

This, but especially up that way where they're not as accustomed to it as here. I never want to wish ill-will/storm destruction on any, but there's a fair amount of people up that way that look down upon the Gulf coast region, believe we shouldn't live in this area because of storms, etc. As such, I dont really get too upset when one finds its way into Manhattan on occasion.
