One thing I’ve learned from watching Flight Radar is that the Anchorage, AK airport is an extremely busy one. It’s a major stop for cargo flights from the U.S. to Asia and vice-versa. Apparently it is the fourth busiest airport in the world for cargo traffic. They get a lot of large cargo planes like 747 cargo variants that stop there.

Well it is a thread about planes.

I use Flightradar24. Me and my son play a game when we see a plane. Guessing where it is coming from and where is it going.

Do y’all watch the turbulence forecast when flying or is that shite worthless?
It’s a good idea to check it because you can sometimes change your altitude to minimize it. I rarely check it, though.

One of my favorite things to watch are the aircraft that are "live" going in and out of Barksdale.

I always abstain from piling on you like everyone else, rightfully does, I guess it’s because you’re a gimp, but your handicap goes up further, you’re a mental gimp, and an a-hole, I suppose you have as much right as anyone on here to spew your sewer pipe, you’d do us all a huge favor by minimizing your right to do so

That’s comforting. What airline do you work for?

I remember my high school aptitude test telling me air traffic control was T the top of the list. I laughed and thought it was crazy. Now, I realize I would love the job. Organizing airplanes, rerouting and directing, etc. A job with some action but you’re not working physically hard. And hopefully in an air conditioned room with windows overlooking the airport.

Family uses it when driving across country, as a game to play, where we guess where airplane took off from and is heading.

a good thing about doing the long haul stuff, you don't have to listen to that shite all the time interrupting your sleep
Then you’ve never had the privilege of crossing the N. Atlantic with 4 AF jets in the vicinity. Total hell! Hard to read the internet with the frogs yapping.

Most majors have a weather product they use for predicting turbulence. Ours was introduced pre-merger and has come a long way since. Thankfully the current company - no name, kept the initial product and actually built upon it post-merger where it is a very good app for predicting turbulence. One of a handful of IT things they’ve actually not screwed up! Along with reports of forecasted areas of turbulence sent to us it uses dedicated flight deck wifi for real time imaging and we can see how the rides of company aircraft are being effected by turbulence.
Protecting the FAs by having them seated during turbulence events has become a big deal the last decade. Sorry you didn’t get a drink on your flight from BHM.
Edited to add that I’ve been flying for the airlines for 32 years and like most of you my eyes are in the sky most times a plane is passing overhead. I use both FlightRadar24 and FlightAware. Thankfully my wife (no pics) is also a pilot so she’s equally guilty.

I keep up with Monkeywerx on YouTube. Anybody else have Skyglass? It’s looks pretty cool, can’t remember how much it costs, but basically it’s FlightAware on steroids.

Does anyone else like to watch flightaware?
One of my pandemic pastimes was sitting in the yard and pulling up FlightAware as planes went overhead.
I took a summer vacation to Minnesota because I found out there was a direct flight from New Orleans that way.

Incredibly high suicide rate.

not that I'm aware of but you can buy a cheap Vhf radio scanner and listen to some of the local transmissions in your area
Do they all run on the same channel? If so, which one and will a handset pick it up?

Just listen to live ATC on your phone.
