Seriously, why do you people believe Alabama is such a bad state?

quote:

Alabama has one of the highest crime rates in the nation, the lowest concentration of mental health providers and no statewide protections against discrimination of any sort. Even so, Alabamans — or as some prefer, Alabamians — are feeling a bit better about their lot in life this year versus one year ago, with nearly two-thirds telling Gallup they feel "active and productive." That helps the state improve on its last-place ranking in this category last year, even though Alabamans don't exactly practice what they preach: Fewer than half say they exercise frequently. 2018 Quality of Life score: 87 out of 300 points (Grade: F) Weaknesses: High crime, health, lack of inclusiveness Strength: Air quality 2017 Quality of life rank: Worst in the nation

Louisiana got an F too. It's a midget fight

ETA - some of those rankings are based on things like "lack of inclusiveness" etc which a lot of people don't give a shite about

When people there try to talk about boudin & cracklins I laugh.

It’s not like there’s no good boudin or cracklings in BR. Ronnie’s boudin goes toe to tie with the best in acadiana, Jerry Lee’s has arguably the best hogs head cheese anywhere, and Bergeron’s cracklings are crazy good.

I agree. BR isn't a cajun area but it's not like there's some arbitrary line that those foods can't be made across.

My wife is from Alabama but can make a damn good gumbo after being in South Louisiana for 20 years

Are you serious? Dude anyone can find an article that shits on a state based on rankings like that. You must’ve missed the one where Louisiana was ranked 50th this year.

Which state has made progress in the past few years? Which state has a better economy? Which state has a better leadership?

The fact that you call them cracklings and not cracklins says it all.

You can stop at any shite hole gas station in Acadiana and get better boudin and cracklins than the best BR has to offer. It’s what they do man. I don’t see how y’all can argue this point.

I enjoyed BR for parts of the 70’s and 80’s, but not so much since that time.
I grew up in in north-central La. and had to Gtfo, so school was a great escape for me, and I landed in BR.
After law school, I moved to N.O., and I still enjoy this city very much, warts and all.

But doesn’t Jackson have great suburbs?

There isn’t one br suburb that I would consider living in mainly cause the traffic sucks and all of the nice stuff is still in br. Most suburbs actually have a lot of good stuff where you don’t have to go into the city.

BR is somewhat interesting in that regard. Until the late 80s and early 90s South BR was pretty much the suburbs. Then John Parker's forced bussing ruling changed all of that. This area is probably 20 years behind a lot of comparable cities in white flight to the burbs.

There's nothing at all wrong with the city. The problem is the amount of shitty people who live within it.

Alabama isn't anything to get excited about, but to me the "good parts" of Alabama would probably beat out Louisiana's "good parts."

But I can understand why leaving a very distinct region for a better-but-not-great one wouldn't feel like much of an upgrade.

I agree 100%.

It sounds weird but it’s all about suburbs. Places like Hoover and Mountain Brook shite on any suburbs that LA has. People try to act like north shore is a Nola suburb Hell no it’s not. It’s a great place to live. Probably the best in the state but it’s not a suburb. North shore is north shore.

If you've lived somewhere that is not as nice as BR, you would see things differently. You obviously need a change and sometimes change is good. Sometimes change makes you realize how good you had it. Either way, it's always going to be here if you would like to return to it. Every place has it's issues. No need to let life frustrate you this way.

No kidding, I took some friends from cenla to the LSU game. They were shocked I didn’t order etoufee or something Cajun at chimes because “we were in Baton Rouge”

We walked by a guy giving free cracklins samples and one guy didn’t want to try any. His ole lady says “we are in Baton Rouge you better try those cracklins”

Your friends are just stupid.

BR has zero personality or culture. Possibly the most "meh" city in the south.

I've been to a few cities in Virginia recently that are much worse than BR

Other than maybe Madison, what exactly do they have out there that isn’t in any of BR’s suburbs?
