The ones that let you pretend you're driving a manual but with no clutch.

Has to be the most pointless feature that's now widespread on cars.

I’m not saying you come off as someone who doesn’t know much about cars...

Never mind, that’s exactly what I’m saying.

I have the little buttons on my gearshift. I always forget I’m using it when I’m using it.

I do when needing to merge on a short on ramp in a congested area or needing/ wanting to pass sometimes. Other than that, no.

I see what you mean in a way. It's why I outfitted my R8 with 8 Ball paddle shifters.

They actually work very well on newer German cars. The transmissions respond pretty much instantly to manual input on both upshift and downshifts.

I’m a car enthusiast and a die-hard manual guy, but there definitely is a place in the world for really good, well-programmed automatics.

Are they needed on a Chevrolet Sonic? No

Are they a huge value add to a Porsche 911? Yes

You are aware of course F1 uses paddle shifting of sorts?

Cue the car guys that will call you less of a man for not knowing how paddle shifters in a car work.

The irony is that they drive a car and they're calling someone unmanly

The paddle shifters aren't fake. They actually perform a function on command.

I can think of many reasons why you'd want an automatic transmission to downshift. Clearly you have never driven in an area with a lot of mountains.

He called them “fake”

What is a PDK transmission? Porsche with their silly fake dual-clutch tranny and fake paddle shifters. Nissan GTR with their fake paddle shifters. Mercedes AMG with their MCT and fake paddle shifters.

The future of racing is in those paddle shifters. There’s no comparison when it comes to shifting speed. There’s a reason performance cars are moving to them.

What cars have fake paddle shifters?

Are they like the fake port holes you can buy at Auto Zone for your 2006 Impala?
