I have a degree from LSU too. Been here in South Florida for 48 years. My son graduated from LSU in 2014. He grew up in South Florida but stayed in BR. Not a day goes by that I don't daydream about the day I get out of this place. The heat, humidity, traffic, crime and cost of living in South Florida is much worse than Baton Rouge. But the kicker is that even the people that aren't criminals are among the most obnoxious, nasty people in the nation.

Baton Rouge is pretty shitty but so are many, many other cities with better reputations. Louisiana is the most insular state in the union (look it up, fewer people leave Lousiana than any other state) so opinions seem to run that BR's somehow uniquely terrible. It really isn't.

I know I've said this before but I've met people who couldn't wait to get out of some of the most affluent parts of California. You make your own happiness.

I may retire and buy some land outside of Baton Rouge some place. I wouldn't want to live in the city itself.

I live in Old Goodwood now. My grandma lived in Broadmoor when I was growing up. Outside of Cortana and Tinseltown, Baton Rouge is light years ahead of where it used to be. Even the crime has gone down since you left. The schools are better, the nightlife is better , mid city is gentrified, ect. Baton Rouge has changed for the better.

Good stuff. Where are you in Old Goodwood? I grew up on Annabelle. My mom still lives there.

I love the metro area. Don't really love the city. I can only recall being taxed, ticketed and shite on by the city.

I have been all over the world. While there are some places I would love to live, Baton Rouge is home. I have my family and friends close by, I have my work, I have the festivals, the football games, the music, and everything else. Sure, Denver or San Diego or Chicago would be great places to live if I could afford it, but it's not like I would be able to take my friends and family with me. I would miss everyone terribly.

Agree that its not uniquely terrible.

Says we have the most people born here now living here. Doesn't mean insular (though that could be one read). Could be people who left then came back.

I live right close to OLOM, off of Ardenwood. My grandma lived right behind the old Broodmoor Theatre shopping center. We used to ride our bikes or scooters over to the book store to buy x-men comic books. We sold that house when she had to move into a nursig home.

Don't remember actual stat but I believe Austin and BR had roughly same population 40-50 years ago. I am sure the LA to TX numbers are pretty big.

Long policy discussions there for a later time.

A lot of people leave after college to go to Houston because there are more entry-level jobs available there. After 5-10 years, a lot come back. Some people who want to be here are forced to move to Houston or Dallas if they want a promotion. When they retire, they come back.

Louisiana, especially the rural areas, is arguably the best place to be a kid or be a grandparent. Plus, being close to family has huge advantages. People from out of state who come down here realize after a while how cool it is to have everyone you've ever known living within an hours drive.

Shreveport = BR - LSU - good food + douche bags + 5 hours from New Orleans

Awesome!

Notable % of US population lives within X miles of city of birth. Home and place matter. It is all trade-offs and some things are hard to quantify.

I moved back and am not leaving, warts and all.

Not disagreeing with your entire argument, but this:

Isn't always true. Ask any of my friends who recently have had kids and have to spend an entire Easter driving from grandparent to grandparent

If Baton Rouge actually had winter, I would live there again in a heartbeat.
