There should be a float switch inside the tank. Once the water inside the tank reaches a certain level, the pump switches on until the level gets low enough. Some do have a timer though.

Thanks for the info!

It is a sprinkler head, marked so that it is not run over while mowing.

It's a sprinkler head. Exact one I have. I have three of them as part of my septic tank setup. Septic tank is three separate section. First is dirty water. Next is charcoal filtration and last one is the filter water. And that's what comes out of those sprinklers.

There's a septic control panel somewhere and will have a test switch. Flip it and water will come out

Found out the hard way to mow those first before they come on.

That's an old Yardly Id-10t model sprinkler head. They get vacuum locked once in while. You gotta suck start it to get it working again.

I assume that PVC pipe is just stuck in the ground so the sprinkler doesn't get hit with a lawnmower

Maybe the lawn service and/or homeowner nailed a few. If there is heavy leaf debris in the fall it may need to be that high to see it.

Has OP ever seen a sprinkler before??
Maybe from up North...

We don't know for sure that it isn't a landmine. I've seen some that look similar to this when I was stationed in Miami. Call the local authorities better to be safe than sorry.
