re: "Document fee" in connection with vehicle purchase

Negotiate the price of the vehicle and or terms first. Don’t even mention the document crap until you have an agreement. Then when you go to sign, tell them you are not paying a document fee. Be prepared to walk out. You might have to once, but they will call and eventually drop that charge

Last time I bought a car, I did this at two places and neither called me back. The third place waived it immediately, but I didn’t haggle much on their sticker price because it was exactly what I wanted at a price I was already willing to pay. They also gave me fair trade-in on my old car. That third place has won my future business when I’m in the market for a car again.

This is coming from a former dealership finance manager. …
They can’t remove it from the bill of sale so tell them to deduct the fee from the sale price of the vehicle.

Not just car dealerships. Check out all the creative fees at a real estate closing with the mortgage and title company fees. Starting to happen in restaurants and the service industry.

Hey Bro...don't shoot the messenger...I was just explaining why dealerships claim its necessary. And it's not just the auto sales industry that does this...when was the last time you got a hotel? a flight? an uber? so many industries have bullshite add on fees that aren't just built into the "sales price"

exactly...fees being added everywhere. and we know how OT baws love to complain about restaurant credit card or other fees added when they go out to dinner with their perfect 10 wives.

Many dealerships will list an "ADM fee". That literally stands for Additional Dealer Markup. That's an absolute no for me.

My post wasn't directed at you per se. Just responding to what you said. Answer to your question though, I rarely go on vacation or fly or uber or use service stuff. But those industries should also have a price of what they expect and just charge that price instead of surprising you with 20 additional expenses. Seems shoddy. Sporting events and concerts are probably the worst. Pay the ticket price, ticketmaster surcharge and parking. $40 to park by the way. That's ridiculous.

Agreed...junk fees are a scourge

just know it is negotiable. wait until you are about to sign the paperwork and then tell them it is too high and you will go somewhere else.
Did something very similar last purchase. Works wonders. It is very pleasing to call them on their bullshite.

Last car I bought we agreed on a price. I confirmed the price and repeated it, saying that plus tax, title and license? Agreed.
When completing the paperwork I questioned the $450 doc fee. Said we agreed on price plus TT&L. Suggested they take it off the price or bump the trade in amount to cover. They refused, I walked out.
Sales manager called me the following day, offered the agreed upon price plus TT&L, and 4 new tires for the wife's van (which we bought from them 2 years prior). I returned and bought the truck.

Look up dealer holdback if buying new. Negotiate that too if you can.

I waste these pricks' time everytime I buy a car. I've walked over $150. They eventually call back but by that time I've bought elsewhere after lying about what I was offered at another dealership.
No you don’t

It’s all just a net number at deal’s profit line for dealership. MSRP, destination charges, document fees, blah blah blah…manufacturer to dealer incentives, etc…all contribute to the one final “net number”. All the inputs to this are mostly just noise.

I've been going to MD Anderson for 9 years now. Just follow ups at this point. They raised the price to park by about 25% last year. Could have been sooner but that's when I noticed. Just went the other day and now they have a service fee charge along with the parking lol. Mind you this garage has been there for decades. It's for sure looked the same since I started going there.

Everywhere - fees, fees and more fees just following the corrupt politicians' pattern of taxes, taxes and more taxes.

BS Fee. Don't finance through them either. Dealers used to make their money on maintenance, now they make it in the finance office. Use a good credit union.

I was told once that its the cost to take it to DMV and have it registered. I think the amount was $400 or $600.... I said, does the dealership person bring over like 4 or 5 sales at a time ?? doesnt cost that much to go to DMV

Yes - and don’t look at your phone bills unless you really want to get pissed
