i don't personally understand the appeal of cutting the ears. not against it, just don't understand it.
that said, we got a boxer mix (with some sort of hound) and decided to keep his tail in tact. that mother fricker comes running into the room whipping that thing around like he's Indiana Jones or something and is constantly hitting folks in the face if they are down at the dog's level for whatever reason. Kinda wished that we would have cut the tail down when he was a puppy now. He's 9 almost 10 yrs old now and he still has the spunk of a puppy.

If the vet recommends against it then I would listen to the vet. We're on our 5th Giant Schnauzer. Two came with docked ears and three came with natural ears. Both types of ears lend personality to the dog.
Here's our current Eli. The right ear tilts a little inward but it doesn't bother us in the least. We think it adds to his character and we have no intentions of showing him.

You're a little late to the game. Most Vets that crop ears won't crop them after 12 weeks. I got my Doberman's ears done at Magazine Street Animal Clinic a few months back. It was a bitch driving from BR to NOLA but in the end was worth it.

I have a Cane Corso and asked the same question and people flipped the frick out. It was about 7 pages of what a terrible person I was but it's okay to get tattoos, breast implants, arse implants, get your dog spayed or nuetered, etc.
If you're in BR go see Helouin Veterinary Hospital, but if another vet said the cartilage was broken, I don't know why they would lie to you. Dobermans require their ears to be taped and posted so it's a longer process. Most veterinarians won't crop ears after 12 weeks. It's always best to get a second opinion. Good luck with being called an a-hole for 5 more pages.

If you compare the pictures above you can see the problem. When a pups ears are cropped they are trained to stand erect. In the top picture the ears have flopped over like a hounds. Maybe they could be trained to stand erect if cropped but probably not.
To those who are against cropping, why don't we make body piercing illegal. Its inhumane. Cropping a working dogs ears and tail serves some purpose, but maybe not a pets.
I own hunting beagles. Their tails will get torn, bloody, and infected from running through briars. Sometimes they are docked for health reasons.

Just a doberman pup, he's 11 weeks right now. Brought him to the vet today and was told the cartilage was already broken and wouldn't be a good idea to get them cut at this point. Any opinions on this? and any recommendations for ear cutting around BR?
I don't know about the broken cartilage thing. But, it should be done when they're very young. Most of the breeders of show/working lines have it done before you ever get the dog.

The dobermans, cane corso’s, etc had cut ears bc they were inside guardian dogs. A cut ear helped them hear sounds bouncing off the walls much better. Their nail pads sit on the top of their feet and don’t click on the floors. Tails are docked so it doesn’t hit the walls while they silently move through the house as well. This is what these dogs were bred to do, cropping their ears is just fine.
Thanks for this. I always wondered about why the cropping. Makes sense.

For the downvoters of this, if you don’t like that this is what a “working dog” is bred to do, then don’t get one. Too many weak minded people out there ruining good breeds like these as well as Shepherds and Mals bc they want them as “pets.”

All dobermans' ears flop over as puppies. When you crop them, you post them to train them to stand up. His vet is saying the cartilage is broken. That's new to me.

Uncut Doberman are beautiful dogs
Changes their look totally. They look like a bird dog instead of a guard dog.

Have adopted 3 Dobes from a rescue, 1st was cut, last 2 uncut. I actually prefer uncut out in public because there are plenty of people who think they are vicious and uncut gives a softer appearance. If I got a puppy I would not have the ears cut. Someone posted about hearing, uncut hear just as damn well, and yeah, they are all protective of a home.

Screw ear cutting. Cut his nose up a bit and put some nose rings in. That'll look badass!

Well, other than the fact human beings can consent to things.

You really gonna trust OT more than a veterinarian on this?

Why not let him have his natural ears? I'm not a peta fig, but I couldn't take a puppy to a vet and say "cut this or that off of it"
Agree

Disagree, one they reach 1 year or slightly older both males and females should be fixed. We have too many unwanted and dumbass backyard breeders now. Also, as a side this really should apply to many humans as well.

Fixed of what? What’s wrong with them.
And males don’t fully mature till 2 1/2 so you’re doing damage by neutering a dog before then.

The cartilage was broken? I’ve never heard of that before.
He probably meant hardened too much to keep the ears from breaking over. 11 weeks is very near the end of the possible window for the ears to stand, and the vet is probably trying to explain to the OP that he waited too long and the cartilage is too thick.
OP, if thats the case and you cut them anyway then you're just hurting your dog for no reason, because the ears will break over anyway and wont stand.
