Why do they get family reunion T-Shirts made as well?
I believe the nickname thing has already been discussed so I wont beat a dead horse.
I did want to comment and say that I wish my family had big badass bbq reunions. Shirts would be cool but I can take it or leave it.

Experience in Track/Field in High School and going to an HBCU have given me some insight into this.
It is preferable to refer to each other with first of (usually) nicknames in sports and social situations. Sometimes we do use last names, but it is rare and mostly an in-group norm.
Contrary to most white athletes, where the last name is the general norm.
As to why it probably has its roots in familial culture. My best guess is that since most blacks have a divided family life, they use colloquial terms to refer to each other in an attempt to create a 'special family unit' with their friends (ie teammates, club members, Greek organizations, etc.)

Like whites do?
I'm pretty much the only one in my group of friends that is called by my last name, because my last name is less common than my first.

Next election cycle, take a drive through some of the redneck areas of the state. Notice how many white politicians cannot get name recognition without putting their nickname in quotes in campaign literature.
How many of the following names did you grow up hearing but didn't know the real, birth names behind them?
T-boy
Bubba
Scooter
Junior
Buddy
It's a low income social underdog thing more than a race thing.
