Spoken like a true sissy boy. You scared of every man that's bigger than you? Someone armed can steal your car whether it's running or not. If he's not armed you are just going to let a bigger man steal your shite while you are putting gas in it ?

I don't have a link to my internal knowledge bank, sorry. You'll just have to trust that I know a lot about how engines work. Or don't. As I said earlier, it doesn't matter in the context of this ridiculous discussion.

A real man keeps his remote key in his pocket so his car can't drive off without him

I'm not shooting at somebody who's trying to steal my truck if my kids aren't in it. frick that truck. I hope said thief totals it in the process of killing himself in a giant fireball of a single vehicle crash running from the cops.

Some newer cars will throw a check engine light if the car is running & gas cap not secure.

No, never. The logic behind it is that your ignition coils and wires can arc in a fume cloud and blow everyone up. So, you're going to start the car In a fume cloud meaning you now engaged a high current electric motor and then the ignition system anyway. Leaving it running is no more dangerous than stopping and starting it from an explosion hazard perspective.

I learnt this from the OT years ago.

However my vehicle has a lockout on the gas cap door/cover if the engine is running. But if it’s hot out and the fam is inside, I’ll go back in and start it after removing the gas cap.

Right. That's usually a result of the vapor recovery system getting pissed off. It shouldn't happen unless you leave the cap off a very long time, drive off with the cap off, or over fill the tank.

I know some cars will do it basically as soon as the cap comes off and if that's the case, just turn the engine off. Some won't let you open the cap if the engine is running. There's so much nanny shite on new vehicles.

7 seconds is the answer

The guy from Engineering Explained has a ton of good auto content.

So idling more than 7 seconds is wasting gas.

Why would you need to shoot him if he's not armed ? Put up some kind of fight if you aren't a female

Good stuff. I suspect engines with auto stop are designed with some starting logic and parts to minimize over-fueling on startups. Thats less than I would have expected. I would have said 30 seconds for a normal car.

It’s not about the gasoline. It’s about the vapors which are extremely easy to ignite.

No. If I have to go inside I will but never if I'm just at the pump.

Thanks for the link! Very cool stuff, will probably have it in mind next time I fill up and try to change up my routine.

The difference is that he did that with the lighter, not a lit cig.

The sparks from the lighter flint and the flame are much much hotter than the end of a lit cigarette. Sparks are extremely hot which is why they are so dangerous. You could also probably flick a lit cigarette just right to get it to light the vapors.

Smoking while fueling something up with gasoline is stupid no matter how you slice it.
