Start/stop cycles are a major source of engine wear. Depending on the use it could be the primary driver of engine life.

And to those asking, I drive a mustang so yes I actually do care about the wear and tear on my engine.

The irony of idiots leaving their engines running for no reason and wasting more gas while filling up is inescapable.

Correct, it has to be an open flame. You can throw a cigarette in a bucket full of gas and it won't ignite.

Wife is different story. I forbid her from getting fuel by herself except in exceptional cases. I keep her car filled up. When she goes on road trips alone, we have guidelines about when and where to stop. The fuel itself is the least dangerous thing at gas stations.
You live in the ghetto?

Only ay Costco because they come around and make you.

Only used to do it when I was LOW on gas in high school and college. Always turn the truck off now to fuel up

Not understanding that it requires a significant amount of fuel to start an engine while commenting on the intelligence of others

Depending on the elapsed time it may well be more efficient to leave the engine idling than it will be to stop and restart it.

No, but there is one within 5 miles of my house and close to the nearest filling station, likely the same as the vast majority of people in this country.
I doubt there are very many people in louisiana greater than 5 miles away from some trashy bullshite, and no filling station on earth is 100% safe from the dregs of the world.
You do you, but my wife ain't getting out the car at a gas station by herself if I have anything to say about it.

I'm weird in that I like breathing less automobile exhaust than more.

No and I make it a point to light a cigarette or cigar and smoke it. Drives some folks nuts these days.

A guy on YT tested this in relation to auto stop/start. He concluded that if you stop for 7 to 10 seconds, it's worth it to stay running. Anything longer saves gas.
And nobody is stopping, getting out, running your card, putting the nozzle in, fueling up, returning the nozzle, hitting "no receipt" and getting back in in 30-60 seconds. Dumb.

Depending on your fuel cap system, it can cause your engine to throw codes, eventually.

So then the new efficient engines that turn off when the car comes to a stop must be horrible, yes?
I'd wager that that one off/on cycle once every couple weeks is minimal in terms of overall wear and tear.
