This is why I turn off my car and put the key in my pocket to get fuel. My wife leaves it running even though I told her I fear for her safety

No because I'm not an idiot that smokes cigarettes at a gas pump and I don't like wasting time turning the engine off and back on.

How long does it take you to turn a key?

Wife is different story. I forbid her from getting fuel by herself except in exceptional cases. I keep her car filled up. When she goes on road trips alone, we have guidelines about when and where to stop.

The fuel itself is the least dangerous thing at gas stations.

I don't like putting my engine through an unnecessary stop and start and depreciating it by that much every time I fill up gas.

No key. Just don't like putting the engine through unnecessary wear and sometimes it would still need to take time to warm up and lower the revs.

If you stop and start your car for a refill every week, that's 52 unnecessary starts you've put on your vehicle in a year. 260 unnecessary starts if you've driven it for five years like mine. That shite adds up.

Only when at Costco and the attendant asks me to, otherwise never in close 22yrs of driving

Eta: I also leave my truck running if I run inside somewhere for 10min or less. Ford with keypad to lock it up while I’m gone.

Start/stop cycles are a major source of engine wear. Depending on the use it could be the primary driver of engine life.

Not that it matters for a passenger car that's going to rust away before the engine wears out, BUT it is actually a significant wear factor.

Same.

First, snd foremost, it is a safety issue.

Second, it's just what men do.
