I do be wishing there was an option to serve in a civilian corps upon turning 18. Infrastructure doesn't repair itself.

He said that the military is sorely lacking for new recruits and the overall numbers are way down.
There were 1.31 Million Active Duty serving in the US Military in 2022. There were 1.38 Million Active Duty serving in the US Military in 2000. Active duty military has been pretty steady for the last 2 decades.

Will ship off people who joined the national Guard. One week a month, two weeks a year … or get deployed to Iraq and stop lossed.

One of the differences between Vietnam and recent conflicts is the use of the National Guard. We needed conscription during Vietnam because the National Guard was not used overseas. In more recent conflicts, the National Guard was used and abused. Anyway, in my opinion, if the United States ever gets wrapped up in a conflict that would require a massive number of troops, we wouldn't have time to conscript anybody before the nukes are flying.

Mr Vietnam Vet is correct on low recruitment, numbers down, country having difficulty defending itself in the next 10+ years - except the draft.
Just because of generational characteristics, Honestly a draft would probably do more harm than good. gen Z will turn the guns on themselves or each other first.
If they need more recruits they can always put in pay / bonus incentives. Good enough incentives will have people lining up. If that's not enough, doesn't take much to crash the economy so that there are less options.

We don't need more troops to defend this country. We don't need the troops we have now to defend this country. We need the troops so politicians can play real life Risk™.

quote:Agreed, wouldn’t be smart to engage Chinese forces on the Asian mainland due to sheer numbers. It will be a primarily naval war in the South and East China Seas and we will be bombing the shite out of the mainland. We would need ground forces to supplement South Korea. We would have to blockade and choke China to death like Britain did to Germany in WWI. I think only China could contest us, from what we have seen from the Russian military for a year, that would be Gulf War 2.0.
The chances the next "war" has a ton of land infantry is probably low.
I also agree with the people who say we will never draft again because we have a lot of volunteers and robots. However it would probably do us some good to adopt the Prussian model of conscription, even though that’s a pipe dream.

Its bigger and more permanent than that. 7 or 8 years ago the Army put out a position paper that said obesity would be a national security issue in a decade, its here now.
The current military age male is so fat they cant even BEGIN basic training safely.

The number keeps getting smaller every year in our military. They will eventually have to do something.....
I watched a video about new recruits on YouTube, some of those kids couldn't do 10 pushups! That's pathetic. I read they are easing training to accommodate today's softer generation.
Now they are letting trans people in, idk...
It's fricked

“The chances the next "war" has a ton of land infantry is probably low.”
This. We have WAY too much money invested in planes, boats, and smart weapons to need a massive amount of infantry, especially to DEFEND the country.
Going off on random wars overseas is another story but they’d never do a draft for an Afghan style war because the public wouldn’t stand for it. And frankly, our weaponry is way too advanced to put in the hands of ill-trained draftees.

Kids today would never take orders much less share a common room and bathroom.

You must be one of Hanoi Jane's fans. That's the kind of shite I encountered when i returned. I applied for a jiob and some pimple faced arse hole asked what kind of drugs was I on. I asked him what did he mean. He answered well you are a vet.I told him to go frick himself and walked out. I wasn't going to get the job anyway. frick him.

And we could get by with much less than that. There are tons of folks in the military who don't much day in and day out. Plus we have way too many bases, we could get by with 1/3 of the bases we have. Cut the number of bases (and therefore the number of military members) and pay the remaining military a much better wage.

A friend of mine is concerned that his 20 year old son will soon be drafted, specifically because he's got some flight training under his belt while also attending college. This all stems from Zelensky saying that the US will soon put boots on the ground in support of their war with Russia.
