Years ago an older guy I worked with said, “on your tombstone they ain’t gonna write, he never took a day off from company X”. I think about that sometimes when I schedule some PTO. Your kids and family are much more important and you want them to remember the time you spent with them.

I’ve gotten 3 performance reviews done, mitigated a couple hundred thousand dollars of risk and received over a million dollars of overpayments back for a client.

I have a bigger problem with people who use their sick leave for stupid shite then come to the office with the flu and get everyone else sick because they don’t have any sick leave left.

Client was ready to just pay plus penalties in interest. Was able to get all interest and most penalties mitigated.

Sure, you get to evaluate all your subordinates subjectively. But yours is purely based on quantitative metrics and your boss doesn't give you an evaluation at all.

ETA: unnecessary "of", smart guy

Your original question was also different than your response. "Respecting" someone is different than giving them an objective performance evaluation as their supervisor.

For the third time I’ll ask you again…

quote:

Let me ask you this, let’s say that guy didn’t come and ask for a day off. Instead, he came in this morning like it was a normal work day, but instead of doing anything, you discover he spent the entire day on an internet message board, only pausing long enough to take a two and a half hour lunch.

What would you do to him?

It’s a very simple question. Now answer it.

I know what you’ve done you’ve fricked off on here all day and took a two and a half hour lunch.

It’s a simple hypothetical question. What would you do to an employee who didn’t take a day off but instead spent the entire day, except a two and a half hour lunch, fricking off on a message board talking shite about you?

Now answer the question.

Big boss Mingo spends an awful lot of his time on TD throughout the day. But it’s cool, because he’s at work and not using his PTO.

Maybe both. It wasn't just a 2.5 hour lunch break. It was literally your entire Friday workday.
