It is something that you probably can’t stop hearing once you start listening for it, and somewhat mind boggling how often the word is used in sentences when people are speaking.

It's possible to cure yourself of this. The most important thing when speaking is to SLOW DOWN. You will be more thoughtful in your delivery, use fewer words, and not be prone to injecting filler words like "like" all the time.

Also, if you hear yourself saying it, stop and correct yourself. It's not "like, the most important meeting you have this week", it's "the most important meeting you have this week."

For me, it’s “or whatever.” I recently used a meeting recording to help write minutes* and was surprised by how many times I said that during a two hour meeting.

*IB4 use IA

I guess I was leaving room for other people’s input but it came across as an oddly non-committal way to express an opinion.

Women under 40 it’s impossible to listen to some of them. It’s every 4th word.

I find myself doing it sometimes and hate myself for it.

Silence or pauses in speech are much better that filling space with junk words. I know it and yet still catch myself falling into that nasty pattern at times.

Not near as bad as the people who say anyway after every damn sentence. Literally drives me crazy. Almost as bad as hearing nails on a chalkboard.

I have a 13 year old daughter and bring it to her attention when she speaks. She’ll get over it or I will die trying.

No. However I have a coworker who says ‘you know what I mean’ constantly. It drives me nuts some days.

As a speech teacher for 25 years the use of filler words such as like, you know, man, and uh are all used while trying to figure out what you are going to say next.
I've had as many as 35 "likes" said in a three minute speech. I know because I count every one of them.
I've been retired for seven years and I still get texts for former students describing people who they have talked to or listened to that dribble the like word continuously.
