I'm not taking any chronic meds for HTN, DM, cholesterol, etc, so I just pay whatever they ask. If I was on a monthly medication for the aforementioned conditions, I would shop around, and probably try to steer the doctor to the $4 list from Walmart.

How would that even work? I've priced prescriptions at our local pharmacy against CVS and Walgreens and and they're the same.

I'm a pharmacist. No you can't negotiate, but you can use discount cards or manufacturer coupons. Prices for medications paid for out of pocket (without insurance) vary enormously from place to place. Walgreens and CVS tend to be the priciest. For example, at my pharmacy we have generics for $4 that CVS charges $45 for.

I know all the best discount cards. If you would like me to help your friend with knowing the lowest possible price, let me know.

What discount cards would you recommend?

I'll tell you what you can do. You can research the drugs online and find coupons that can completely offset the cost of the medication and the money you save still counts against your deductible. You're welcome.

Slamming a pill up your butt is so damn degrading... I can't even look at myself in the mirror afterwards
