Do you more or less proactively assist random people in situations than before?

For instance, there was a time when I would leave a store an see a person, particularly a woman sort of struggling get their groceries in the back of the car, such as cases of bottled water or some other relatively heavy items...and I would come over to assist. Just helping a person out selflessly. Now? Not so much.

I know it's distressing to think this way as it contributes to more division within us as a society, but it's just the way it is.

It seems as if everything is an imposition now. If not that, they figure you are working some kind of angle or they are just downright b****y are a-hole 'ish. Maybe it's the environment....I dunno.

Another time earlier in the year I'm on the escalator going up and this chick had money sticking out of her pocket damn near about to fall out. I got her attention "Excuse me, ma'am". She turned around like I was bugging her. Then when I told her about her money, she just hissed with a half attitude, tucked her money in and got back on her phone.

I see someone who may use a little help or warning in any way, most of the time I just go about my business. Their problem, not mines.

I’ll hold the door open for someone if reasonable going into a store but other than that I don’t give a shite anymore.

I mind my own business.

If they can’t reach the top shelf, it’s just natural selection at work.

Still help out whenever I can. Just the way I was raised.
Example from yesterday. I have this older woman that lives down the road. I’m picking up limbs in the yard. I notice she’s down there trying to do the same and has a limb stuck. Go down, assess the damage, get my chainsaw and cut it out. Spend 45-60 minutes helping her till her son arrives.

I was behind a car at a stop sign near campus once. The car pulled out and got nailed by cross traffic. I checked on the driver and it was this very hot co-ed with a Chi O jersey on. She had a cut near her scalp that was bleeding so I got a clean cloth to hold against the cut to slow the bleeding. She was coherent and seemed okay.

An ambulance arrived and the EMTs seemed very concerned that she might have a chest injury and kept asking her if she wanted a chest exam. She said no a couple of times but then agreed. They walked her into the back of the ambulance and shut the doors for privacy during the exam. Guys will be guys.

You mention how some people are a-holes. A few years ago in Las Vegas I get into an elevator and there is one person in the elevator, a woman, she had just pressed the button for her floor, as I walked in I said "twelve please" and walked to the back of the elevator. She turned around and yelled "YOU'RE WELCOME!!! I told her to lighten up. When the elevator stooped on my floor, she starts walking out of the elevator. I said "wrong floor, love." She turns around all embarrassed and walks back into the elevator without saying a word. As I passed her I hollered "YOU'RE WELCOME!!!!

Nope.

It isn't worth it anymore. Every interaction with a stranger in the wild could turn into a shite show.

I have decided to take the Chinese approach.

Eyes forward and walk briskly.
