I think we all agree that the worst version of thinking Baton Rouge is a shithole is when you live in a suburb of Baton Rouge and think Baton Rouge is a shithole. People fitting that description are, in every way conceivable, worthless and boring.

I think it’s exaggerated.
Of course there’s areas that are worse than others but I enjoyed my 6 years in Baton Rouge and will more than likely move back eventually

Br was ripe to made into a shitstain, then Katrina happened and it became a full on pants shitting
Posted on 8/30/19 at 4:20 am to Eli Goldfinger
I’m not sure why the house prices have become what they are in BR.
Also, not much really seems to ever change about BR

I know personally out west I always champion the uniqueness of Louisiana when I can, and generally people have a curiosity and positive comments when they see my new Orleans address on my license. It's like family, you can talk shite about one another but blee dat I'm not going to let other outsiders put down on my family.
Louisiana residents in general have a very apathetic attitude towards their state. It's well earned from years of political corruption and ineptitude but it certainly doesn't help.
Just go to MSY any day of the week and look at all the Saints and LSU gear that's the go-to for travel attire when traveling out of state. Let everyone know "bitch I'm from Louisiana"

I grew up and spent much of my life here. It didn’t used to be a shithole, but it has been in steady decline since Judge Parker single handedly destroyed the public schools and started the white flight to the LP and AP. The infusion of new undesirables resulting from Katrina has accelerated the decline, and the election of SWB has sealed the city’s destiny. The only thing keeping this from being Jackson Part II is LSU.

Some parts of BR are nice and some are shite.
The city is like concentric rings of an old tree.

I think there are areas that are shitholes. Especially NBR. Baton Rouge has some big issues, but I’ve been happy here for 10 years. I’m sure there are nicer places, but all of my family is nearby. I can’t just up and leave without a really good reason.

I hate to play the nostalgia card, but when I grew up in BR in the 80s it seemed like a great place to be young (thanks LSU) AND to raise a family. It was everything NO wasn't.
This nails it. It really was a great place, as a kid. You didn't have the daily crime dominating the evening news...the murder; the drugs.
Kids could play outside until dark- when they went inside, instead of roaming around with no supervision.
Baton Rouge proper didn't change- the people living in it did. And for those of us who can remember how it once was, it is sickening.
I'm sure some will take issue with statements like this. Well....tough- because it is the truth. Most people do not enjoy living in a community overrun with people who do not seem to care about anything other than making $hitty life choices.

Outside of LSU, BR is NOLA with none of the good stuff.
Outside of LSU its Jackson Ms. Best comparison I tell people
To me, Nola feels more shithole than BR because of its age.
Honestly though, how many larger cities in the deep south arent Shitholes?
I got none
You dont get a non southern shithole until you get up to atlanta and nashville

For BR to be between New Orleans and Cajun country, yet have no real cultural identity other than LSU is pretty pathetic.

I don’t believe this.
Also, I don’t live in AL.
Alabama has gorgeous mountain-ish areas like Little River Canyon.
Gulf Shores/Orange Beach. And no cities I consider worth visiting or living in, besides Fairhope area.
New Orleans is still my favorite city, emotionally, but I'll never live there again.
Baton Rouge became much more Shole postK

I like Baton Rouge.
LSU, due in large part to the population explosion in BR between 1930-1960, was a critical producer of military officers throughout the 20th century.
If you think that's a pathetic cultural identity, then you're more patheticker for not knowing much about LSU and Baton Rouge.
As far as the 21st Century and LSU ROTC, LSU's Fall ROTC ceremony, LSU Salutes, has TWICE bumped ESPN Gameday from the Parade Ground to the Quad. Let that sink in.

Yes. If LSU was someplace else I’d never go there.

The cultural identity of Baton Rouge is like it is for most capital cities in all 50 states. It's a melting pot of all the different cultures around the state, and residents whose ancestors moved to the capital city from a certain area elsewhere in the state (years ago). Thus, you have a mix of people of Cajun descent, people of New Orleans culture descent, people from North Louisiana, etc.
I've read on here where people scoff at the idea that some of us are in fact, Cajun. My mother's side of the family didn't start speaking English until her parents (my grandparents). You don't think I have Cajun in my blood (prairie Cajuns from western Acadiana)? My father was from New Orleans with heavy, heavy Sicilian and Irish mix. That entire side of my family lives in New Orleans metro now. We were transplants because of a job he got when I was 3. So yes, we still have "cultural identity" even though I don't have a New Orleans zip code, drinking at all hours of the day doing the 2nd line in the streets in the evening and a walking/talking Chamber of Commerce brochure for the city of New Orleans. And that's just me.
Your reply is very short sighted and ignorant. It makes you look juvenile and stupid.

Not this shite again. Even on its worst day, Baton Rouge is still miles better than Tuscaloserville.
