64 during the day

that may be what you set your T-stat at, but there is little chance your residential AC can provide 64 degree air when its 95+ degrees out

But, when people come over we lower it to OT levels.

We do the same. Have friends from San Francisco spending the night Friday so I'll have to break out the longjohns.

A Nest thermostat is a great investment.
You can program it exactly how you want - 72 6pm to 7am. 76 during the day while no one is home but the pets. It anticipates that it will take awhile to cool down so begins to pre-cool a couple hours before you get home.

It also has a "smart" feature that tries to anticipate your schedule and cool/heat accordingly. This feature never worked great for me. I just program a schedule in.

12000 BTU is a one- ton unit, so you have 2 tons of refrigeration. typical conversion is 300 or so SF per ton. when you say min-house, you mean you live in 600 SF?

genuinely curious as a 20 degree difference between air temp and cooling temp is about all any forced air system can do. if its 95 degrees out, 75 inside is all you are getting

I can easily keep ours on 70 when it's 96 outside. It's a 5 ton Trane, 2400'ish sq ft house.

558 square ft climate controlled. 72 square ft is bathroom and closet. Doors stay closed.

Sadly my new place will begin construction in January.

What do you think about that?

No. I have one friend that keeps his at 76, which can be stuffy at times, but not unbearable.

I'm fine at 76. 74 consistently gets too cold. Some of you must be reptiles to crank it down to 70 or even 60 wtf?. I would have to put on a jacket at that point.

Ceiling fans help, baws.

I keep mine at 75. It's a little chilly while it's running, but 76 is a little stuffy.

5 tons for 2400 SF sounds light but if it works it works
I have (2) 3 ton units for 1800 SF but it’s a high peak acadian and it’s not well insulated

300 to 500 SF per ton is the industry standard, and two smaller units are better than one big one. I just walked in to my place from work, t star is set on 80 with the fans going and it’s more than comfortable

When I walk into a hot house like that, it gives me a headache.
