Coworker of mine is in his 50’s, zero kids, not married, and has a decent job. Was arguing on the side of the road with a female driver and started having chest pain. Went to the ER and everything was ok. The next time I saw him he starts rambling that he was glad it was nothing because he has no health insurance. He had a heart attack last year and had three cardiac stents placed then. I asked if he had health insurance back then and he said no. He said that he cut a deal with the hospital and he is paying $30 a month for a very long time until it is paid. We talked some more and besides no health insurance he does not have a 401k, does not have any savings, and is living pay check to pay check. States he will have to work until he dies. My mind was blown by how financially irresponsible he is.

I know another a woman in her 50’s. No kids, never been married. Has health insurance but does not have any savings, lives paycheck to paycheck, and emptied here 401k out 10 years ago to buy a luxury car. So currently she has zero money of any kind for retirement.

Seriously what are these people thinking.

People who don’t have kids are often very selfish people. They struggle to find meaning in life, so planning for hard times or the future is pointless to them as all of life is pointless.

Sounds like everything has worked out okay for him so far. $30 a month for a heart attack is a damned good deal.

This is the guy who would live frugally and put a ton into 401K and then drop dead on the side of the road while arguing with a female driver. Some snot nosed nephew two states over that he saw once a year at Christmas then inherits all his cash. frick that. You can’t take it with you.

Majority of older people i know/knew who had to go back to work, did, because of having a catastrophic health event.

And they basically had to work to pay back the Hospital bills.

Even with those medicare/medicaid stuff, there is always a cost.

How in the world did he talk them into this? It would take over 77 years to pay that off.

Not to derail thread but the hospitals outsource billing and collections these days and the companies that handle it accept things you wouldn’t expect. Medical billing is big business and they love people who will pay regular, even at low amounts. Recurring revenue. I had a sudden viral infection and had to be admitted overnight a couple of years back. The hospital didn’t submit to my insurance and tried to bill me $8,500. I called up and said that I wasn’t paying $8,500 out of pocket but I would pay $1,500. They said “Great! We will mail you a corrected invoice.” I was happy, they seemed happy. Then they never mailed me an invoice. I was really happy with the $0.

It is not that uncommon, the hospital knows that he could just walk away leaving them with nothing, they know he likely has no assets so the chance of recovering anything in a lawsuit is slim. They are left with choice of selling the debt to a collection agency for 5-10 cents on the dollar or taking the small installment payments.

Yep, my ex-wife. Makes close to $500,000 a year and is married to someone who makes around $100,000. Always blowing and going (nothing to show for it), for example, her credit score is so bad, she couldn't get credit at Pier One. Like I said, she is married but they live apart (paying 2 house notes). Can't fix stupid.

It'll never be paid at $30 per month. All that mess would have had a bill north of 50K.

True, and that's why you and I pay 2 jigtillion a month for insurance, to pay for the irresponsible. I don't mind my premiums being a little higher to help with indigent care, but when someone has the means they should at least have to pay per month to the hospital what a normal working person pays the insurance company.

I have a family member who is 62 and has made at least $100k/yr since 1988.

Not a damn penny in retirement or savings to their name.

We talk on tOT about millenials being overentitled pussies but most boomers are far worse IMO

Unfortunately this sounds like my parents. My dad made a lot of money but didn't put anything back. He passed away last year and it has been hard for my mom.

I’m sure the hospital will get in line with the other creditors who will cease all of his possessions when he dies.

it's so bad man. My parents are in a bad position, my in-laws are in a worse position. Both of them have parents (greatest gen) that lived comfortably in retirement for 35+years. How can you not live by that example?
