I know a lady that lost her house because she couldn’t stay out of the casino.
I know a guy who would get paid on Friday and would play video poker until he ran out of money or Monday morning rolled around.
I don’t see the attraction but apparently it’s very addicting to some people.

This is why comps for live poker are trash. House games are much more lucrative.

My neighbor is. He's pushing 70 and can't seem to stay out of the casino. He stopped by last weekend before he headed out with his Tommy Bahama shirt, khaki shorts, five packs of cigarettes, doused in Old Spice ready to rock and roll.

I have a strong feeling his wife will leave him soon because of it.

Me.

Quit in January this year. Very addictive personality. Lost about 20k last year. Didn’t affect me in any way besides losing 20k but I quickly realized it was an issue.

As someone who has struggled with gambling myself and know others that have as well, the typical NOTICEABLE signs are:

1. Talking about gambling a lot
2. Mood swings relative to whether bets are winning or losing. Most noticeably would be angry outbursts
3. Filling "bored" free time with gambling
4. Difficulties concentrating on other things when bets are ongoing
5. Strained relationships with friends and/or family

On the surface, it's sometimes are hard to tell if someone is addicted to gambling or just making a couple five dollar parlays and talking about it a lot. I think the most noticeable sign, though, are the mood swings.

If you notice that client is gambling too much, the worst thing you can do is go up to that person and be like "I've noticed you've been gambling too much." You have to approach the conversations very, very delicately.

I think that legalizing gambling is completely fine, but the constant barrage of gambling ads is a major, long-term problem in this country.

About 10 years ago, I interviewed for an in-house position with a hedge fund. During a meeting with the CFO, I found out he was a Penn State fan. It took me just mentioning that I was an LSU fan, and the rest of the interview was him talking about sports.

Seemed like a nice guy. Younger, had a pretty wife and kids. Made a very nice salary.

Anyway, I wound up not getting the job, but about two years later, I read that he was arrested for embezzling the hedge fund’s money. As CFO, he would set up LLCs for which he was the only signatory, and he would transfer the hedge fund’s money to those entities. Turned out he had a gambling problem.

I think he took them for around $10 million before he was caught. His wife divorced him, and he wound up serving time. Threw his whole life away.

Alcohol does too

Pretty much all my friends have some kind of parlay going every other day, but it’s never for big money
My buddies and I have a Slack channel, we discuss our bets we make every day, ranging from a total daily bet in the 100s to others in the 1000s.

I am not in the 1000s camp, though I can't say I don't periodically bet that much in a day, it's just very few and far between.

I'm 70, so I've seen some stupid shite people have done over the years. I know a couple who lived in bayou country who lost their home due to an addiction to Bingo, of all things.

And I once worked with a guy who was a degenerate gambler. One week he was rolling in the dough, next week struggling to get grocery money. I saw this guy go out and buy a new boat, motor and trailer and 2 weeks later it was owned by the bookie.

He was a total rags to riches and back to rags guy and it took a huge toll on his life costing him his marriage, losing his house and the stress of it put him in an early grave.

It’s running rampant among my age group. One of the biggest areas of division for some newlyweds

My best friend’s dad was a bookie. He used to get all kinds of new toys every fall…4 wheelers, RV’s, boats. His first truck was lost to his dad from the Packers/Patriots Super Bowl by a man who hunted with us

Was in the casino business for 35 years . I don't gamble . If you win , leave . I have seen divorces , overdoses , suicides , and many alcohol related deaths .It just ain't worth it .

I’m just a regular Joe. I have never been inside of a casino. Back around 1992 when Louisiana scratch offs came aboard, I probably spent like $50 playing them. I spent an additional $50 playing the lottery. After that, I never played again. What’s the fricking point ? I did win $50 on matching 3 numbers on a lotto ticket. I took the ticket to Albertsons on college drive and bought a rotisserie chicken.

I used to dabble in it online for sports betting, but never anything large. Usually $20 bets on baseball. It's fun as long as your responsible.

A guy I grew up with had a dad with a terrible gambling addiction. They'd have all new stuff in the house one week and it'd be empty the next. That whole family was messed up.

I knew a guy (has since passed away) that sold his business and gambled away millions.

I went to Harrah's after turning 21, lost $20 on slots and was cured for life. My inner Jew shut that shite down quick.

Nice description.

I have a female in-law, of all people, who is a gambling addict. I just don't understand gambling addiction--even more so when it comes to women.
