I am watching the show and find it hard to believe anyone can live like that.

Yes. And the house is a perfect setting for a horror movie.

Big property filled with piles and piles of random shite.

Old bowling balls. Nautical buoys. Wind chImes.

I have pictures...i’ll See if I can find them.

Really an interesting fellow.

It's a mental illness. The person feels serious distress at throwing something away...like they might need it later on.

Helped clean my Mom's house last weekend. Tax returns dating back to the 70s. Twenty-plus years of bank statements. Every holiday card anyone sent her.

I have an aunt who is a hoarder. It’s breathtaking how much useless stuff that she insists on keeping. Her basement has dozens of mason jars full of homemade jelly that must be 30 years old by now. It’s a mental illness.

I am watching it too. It motivates me to get up and get something done around here.

My former SIL was like that but not dirty. She just kept everything.

My mother. She has magazines dating back 20 years. Both bathtubs in her house are overflowing with boxes full of shite that I can see no reasonable explanation why it hasn't been kicked to the curb. But she gets very defensive if I mention anything about it. I don't have to live there so I just let it go. No idea how my dad tolerates it.

I was renting a condo and some a-hole owner a few doors down decided to section 8 their unit. I won't go into detail, but the people were professional tenants from hell. A woman in her 70's with two mentally ill adult sons. They hoarded so much garbage, literal garbage and also had a roach infestation of biblical proportions. I mean like, swarms of roaches like a horror movie. I went over there with my landlord once to try and resolve one of many issues they caused. I'll never forget it . Eventually the sheriff had to drag their asses out of there, the unit had to be completely gutted, and the owners of the neighboring units are suing the owner that rented to these people. Good times.

Yes.

Even when they stop accumulating new stuff and start getting rid of things, it takes forever to do it.

The temptation is to find the grail in the garbage rather than chuck a lot of stuff out and be done with it.

It’s VERY common. At work almost every person has an elderly person like that in their family.

I think the main issue is an attachment to memories associated with things. People don't want to let go of an old thing because it reminds them of a happier time in their life.
