My wife's family, but they are from
Virginia and from a tobacco plantation family. Her Grandma was the executive social secretary or something like that for a tobacco company. (She planned all social events) Her cousins swear that she used to give them Cigarettes when they were teenagers. This is seriously debated but no debate she gave them candy cigarettes when they were kids. She smoked all her life and had a touch every afternoon and lived to almost 100, but her husband died of smoking-related emphysema and his 50s.
I buried my father when I was 19 due to a massive heart attack that I have doubt was related to his 2 pack a day habit and I swore I would never date a smoker but somehow married one although she quit when she had kids.

I used to be.
I worked for the Tobacco Division of USDA. It is a very interesting industry and you would be amazed at some of the places it is produced. In its prime there were 1,100 acres of Perique tobacco in Louisiana. The last time I checked there were 12 acres.

I believe it is still highly valued.

... I don't know anyone except my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grand father was one of the first families of Virginia. He owned 1,287 acres in Henrico County Virginia and grew tobacco as his crop, shipped to England. This was in 1654 , guess he started it all , maybe.

My first job out of college - way back in the 90’s - was with a tobacco company as a territory manager. We had several brands of loose leaf chewing tobacco, including Beech Nut. It was a hell of a job for someone in their early 20’s with account management, golfing, drinking, free samples at farm/hunting events. I miss that job…good times.

quote:We planted about a quarter acre of Perique in Livingston Parish probably a decade ago. Stuff grew like crazy and ended up with huge leaves hanging in our barns for 6 months or whatever. Never ended up doing anything with it--buddy of mine who gave me the seeds ended up having a heart attack and giving up pipe tobacco. No idea what it's worth, but it dang sure liked our soil.

It is a condiment tobacco. It was mainly used in pipe tobacco for its aromatic properties. How may people do you know today who smoke pipes?

I used to work for one of the big producers. Pretty much a corporate job like everywhere else. Except smoking was allowed in the offices far after every other office banned it.
Interestingly around the time I left most had actually quit smoking cigarettes and switched to vaping.
