Do you know any Virginia residents that consider Virginia a southern state?

Seems most I meet these days do not. In fact, some seem to abhor southern culture, and I don't mean the negative stereotypes, but pretty much anything southern.

Not my experience at all. Maybe in Northern VA in the DC Suburbs that is the case, but I spend a great deal of time in Richmond and Tidewater and they all embrace their "Southern" stature.

Richmond still felt southern until the mid-2000s.

All my Virginia friends think it is a southern state and I agree with them.

They're bad old days South. Their governor wears a hood and sheet.

Are all the statues still up in Richmond? The Arthur Ashe one is safe I’m sure.

There's a difference between the South and deep South imo. But most of the people who grew up in Richmond or south of here consider themselves southerners. Plus there's a lot of heritage here reflecting that.

I agree with that, and not just in terms of geography.

Being from the state, I can explain it.
Virginia is a tale of two states.
You have NOVA (Washington , DC area) and everything else.
NOVA folks not only think they are better than the rest of the state, but better than everyone.
90% of the state's residents are proud to be Southerners, however, it's been over run by transplanted Yankees who are watering down the Southern Heritage of the state.

I don't know any Virginia natives who DON'T consider it southern. Now, I do know a number of transplants in the DC adjacent counties who don't feel that way.

Yes, and if you talk to them and really listen, they are southern. Diff than northerners/New Yorkers.

That makes sense, and kind of what I suspected. Maybe the native Virginians whose ancestors lived there relate to being southern, and are more likely to stay there, whereas those "transplants" are more likely to move. I think those are the ones with whom I have more interaction. I build houses and own rental houses, and I generally get along with all my clients and tenants, but of the few I have had trouble, 2 couples were from Virginia but had the attitude of pissed off northerners. I am NOT saying all northerners are like that but you may know some that come down south and want to advise the dumb southerners how to run things. That aside, I have met a few others from Virginia that didn't seem to thrilled about all things southern and was just curious about it. Thanks for the feedback.

You seem to think we want your change, and your improvements.

We want nothing of the sort.
