I have relatives who are native to the NOVA area and are now in their 80's. They had the deepest southern accents I've ever heard and most definitely considered themselves southern. I lived in Falls Church for a short time as a kid. That whole NOVA area has changed a lot over the last 50 years.

I travel to dc all the time. They definitely do think it’s the south due to mason Dixon line. To me they are a bunch of Yankees.

Washington DC was literally created to be a government city.
If it weren't for all the massive federal lobbying jobs, etc. the whole area wouldn't be more than nearby shitholes like Baltimore and South Jersey.

I lived in the western area of the state (above Roanoke) and saw the culture was in transition - many of the diners served potatoes for breakfast instead of grits!

Yes. I spent three years in the Shenandoah Valley two blocks from Stonewall Jackson’s grave. Those folks definitely (and rightly) considered themselves southerners.

86% of the worlds Internet traffic goes through Ashburn, VA. That's not government money producing all of that revenue. That's just one industry for starters.

I'd vote to annex that shite to DC.

Almost everyone I know who is 45 minutes plus outside of DC considers themselves to be southerners
