5 years ago we ended up with the home I grew up in so one neighbor is family and the other two are older ladies I’ve known my entire life. Outside of them I know a few names and exchange pleasantries but that’s about it.

I know a few. Not many at all. And most of them are because the kids know each other.
Was same when we lived in Texas.
When I was a kid we knew everyone. No one is ever home anymore, people work all the dang time now.

I enjoy chatting with my neighbors but the conversations are usually very brief and begin with the a request for me to return inside and "put some pants on, please."

My immediate neighbors for the last 17 years are an older Asian couple. My best guess from the husband's hard-edged appearance is he may be a North Korean spy or defector. :) They are very old school culturally in that they will never make eye contact or interact with you if you are outside or driving by.
They take their daily exercise by walking our street from the corner to the cul-de-sac and back again, but never do this together. One time as I was driving by, I managed to catch the wife off-guard, gave her a smile and a quick wave. So she felt compelled to stop and bow.

I know my neighbors but I have no interest in socializing with them. The majority of people on my street are older widows or old couples. There are about 30 houses in my small hood and maybe 5 home owners are under 60 years old. They are all obsessed with their yards. I have to write a check to pay quarterly dues! So, I am nice to them if I see them but I try to be stealth about getting in and out of my house if they are outside. Good thing is they watch the place like a hawk during the day while I am at work.

I know almost everyone on my block. Most of my neighbors are a lot older than I am - mid-40's and older.

Please, please, please use the correct verb. There is no such word as conversated. It's conversed.
Now I have to ask after the way you slaughtered the English word, are you black?

I have great neighbors on either side of my house and know most of the others on my street. My direct next door neighbors and I have grow rooms in our basements and we each grow different stains and exchange them come harvest time.
Nothing like getting together in summer on my deck and try them out while firing up the grill and the bong.

I really don't care to know them and would rather keep to myself. If I get to know them, they will want to hang and start coming over more often and that isn't cool. So yeah, some people just want their space.

Good question/issue. We know ours and are friendly as far as waving or passing comments but do not consistently interact much at all.

Of the eight neighbors within 50 yards of my property, we hang out with two of them. Eat, drink, and kids play together. One hates me. And the other 5 are just there, I’ll usually make a hand gesture when I see them.

Know all of them, even the ones we "back up" to.
Live on a little dead end street in Old Metairie. All of our houses around us are relatively new tear-downs.
One family throws an annual big New Year's Eve blowout, and we have all neighbors, family and friends over for Gumbo Z'Herbes on Holy Thursday night. Plus other occasional events.
We used to be even tighter when the kids were younger and pre-Katrina-- crawfish boils and cookout block parties on the dead-end street; parents going out to dinner together, moms taking kids trick-or-treating while dads drank beer and gave out candy; Saints games together; canoeing/camping trips, movies, game watch parties all together, etc.

I know about half the street. We are sandwiched between permanent snowbirds from Ohio, and a young bachelor.
The bachelor works 6-7 days a week for the city and is never home. Plus he used to sell drugs, so we never got super close. He kept his distance and that is fine with me. It was obvious he would eventually get raided....and he was.
Very sloppy dealer.
The old people from Ohio are awesome. Super polite, quiet, and maintain a nice house/clean yard. They tolerate our dogs back yard antics, and are always home so I’ll know if anything happens to the house when we are gone.
Across the street we have more snowbirds who split their time between here and yankee land. Our end of the street is half empty every summer. I love it.

If you move into a house you'll be in for awhile you make it a point to introduce yourself to them and if you don't they might put in the effort or offer a house warming gift depending on the type of neighborhood but it can be off putting for you not to

I know most of the folks in my park which is good and bad because they always need to borrow something or get bailed out of jail

It doesn't matter as much in neighborhoods without families with children. Parents are going to want to know the story behind everyone nearby
