Do you know any of your neighbors?

Growing up at my old house we knew the neighbors by name and we always said hi and conversated. I noticed now after living in my house since 2011 I still don't know any of my neighbors. It's weird when I cut the grass or wash the car seeing other neighbors not acknowledging the other neighbors. It's like they are scared, if one neighbor is outside and they come across another neighbor they they take their phone out act like they are talking on it until they go inside their home. When my parents bought their home a few years back their neighborhood is the same way nobody says hi or anything. Most of the people who live in our neighborhood are pretty young. I wonder if it's because of social media now people don't know how to talk face to face?

I know most of the people on our block. We've been here 4-5 years.

I don't know any. I mean I know their names and wave to them when I see them outside but beyond that - nothing.

I know a few of them, but not all of them. Most of them I met because my dogs kept getting out until we replaced most of the fencing (the labs were literally ripping the wooden fence boards out to eat them).

Why don't you have this conversation with your neighbors

Everyplace I’ve ever lived have had pretty social neighbors. Maybe it’s you?

I’ve lived in new house for a year and one next door neighbor is outgoing extrovert and we talk alot, other neighbor is introvert like me so we acknowledge each other when appropriate and we are both fine with that.
When you have kids someday you’ll make alot more neighborhood friends with similar aged children. Don’t sweat it.

I know who everyone is on my block and about 60% of the people in my subdivision.

We know 3 of the families on our street and 4 others around the neighborhood. Most everyone else is one a “smile and wave” basis.
People here are cordial, but I wouldn’t say people are particularly friendly.
EDIT: relatively new community. We’ve been here 4 years

I do, and I'm reminded of why I loved not having neighbors for so long.
ETA: It's a weird combination of undergrad students, young families, and some old folks. I only like the old folks. There's a 75 year old man that lives next door, his wife passed last year. I'll usually shoot the shite over a a few beers and some grilled meats once or twice a week.

It’s transitional.
9 years ago, we knew everyone on our half of the block. It wasn’t unusual for 10 kids to be playing in the yards and the same number of adults out front chillin and hanging out.
Now only my next door neighbor has small kids and all the rest including mine are grown and in college or close. So the block is much quieter than it used to be.
It is what it is.

I know quite a few. Even within several blocks I know quite a few people.
I'm out walking quite a bit and always say hello. The folks who are friendly will be open to stop and have a conversation. It's easy to get to know people that way.

Does your neighborhood have an HOA? If so, talk to the association president and ask them about setting up a community page on an app like NextDoor. Since your community skews young, that’s a good way to “connect” people in a way they’d be familiar with.

Have you tried trolling the shite out of the neighborhood Facebook page?
You can make friends that way too.
I’ve got a small following going.

Been in the current for 8 years, but we are a bit out in the country. Even still, we know most of the neighbors (some better than others). We've made them cookies, etc., try to be nice so when 100 people show up for a wing ding, they don't complain.
Our next door neighbors are good friends...they just watched our dog and fed our cat while we were out of town on vacation for a week. We drink w/ them 2-3 times a month and the wives are always sharing food.
You should reach out.

Yes. I’m on the HOA board and know too much about some of them.
We had five families in the hood together last night for supper and gathering. Good times.

I have met most of my neighbors. In fact I introduced myself to my immediate neighbors before I closed on the place. My backyard neighbors are Puerto Rican. They play Dominos on their porch. One evening they were playing and I was frying fish. I brought over a platter of fish and fried potato’s. Since then those folks have fed me pork cooked five different ways, soups, chicken and rice the way they cook it. Good food and great neighbors.
