Wow! A SuperSaint post I can endorse.
I went to a certain Jesuit university on St. Charles Avenue in the 1980s, I often rode my bicycle from my home in Little Sicily in Harvey to said institution. The Jackson Avenue ferry was my river crossing. Remember it fondly. In those years it was served by the M/V Crescent/Thomas Jefferson

The new ferry is laughable to say the least

My favorite-ever overnight ferry ride. From Japan to Korea. The ferry to Pusan, as it were. I recommend the sleeping berths with beds. Good foods and a great bar and lots of cool expats to talk to from all over The West.

Thank you. In this rush to get to the decorating, I conflated Canal St and Jackson Ave.

We do hope you will join us this year for Front Day. We have Max Brenner hot chocolate in transit, and it will make for a lovely batch

Are you still a member at Tehama? Next time we are in Monterrey, we would love to shoot a round there with you.

I miss the one at St Francisville.
Same. I enjoyed the break from a long drive to stretch my legs and take in the sights as the ferry crossed the river.

I thought last I heard the Jackson terminal was going to be repurposed for cruise ship or something

I enjoy your essays. Now it's time for you to visit the Canadian eastern provinces.
The ferry from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland is a long ride and I've always seen whales. I've also gathered stories from the locals. In NFL you must visit the park that is the site of the Viking settlement.
I'd like to take the local across the St. Lawrence to more of Newfound land.
Another ferry in that part of the world is Portland Maine to Nova Scotia, and you'll land near where "Maudie" of the movie lived and painted.
You would enjoy the people up there and they, you.

Yes...love them. Especially the WA state ferries you have highlighted. I have been around there (Ft. Casey, Deception Pass, Whidbey, Orcas Island, San Juan Island, etc and on that Ferry route between Ft. Casey & Port Townsend. The PNW (from SF to San Juans) is my favorite part of the USA.

Generations of my family have ridden the Port Aransas ferry across the Corpus Christi shipping channel, a very short journey compared to the ferries you mentioned in your post.
My grandfather, when he was alive, if he was driving and his car was on the front row of the ferry, would delight the grandchildren by acting like he was steering the ferry by turning the steering wheel of his car during the journey.

The logistics of strangling whores on a ferry must be a nightmare.*

We took the ferry from Anacortes to Orcas Island last month. First time riding a ferry. I really enjoyed it. Was hoping to see a whale, but we did not. Did see some dolphins (porpoises?) and seals.
We also visited Port Townsend, and I agree, lovely little town. The Olympic Peninsula is incredible. Camped two nights in the forest around Forks. I absolutely love the rain forest there. The green moss that covers everything, the mushrooms, the giant trees, and undergrowth of ferns and decaying trees.
Deception Pass was cool. Saw a seal there playing/hunting in the current under the bridge.

Living in N.O. for all but 2 years of my 70, I've ridden on all the ferries that crossed the Miss. River in this area from the one that leaves English Turn to the one that use to be in Luling.
The one I used the most was the Chalmette Ferry to go back and forth across the river. Sure beat driving through town to get to the bridge downtown.

The Belle Chasse-Braithwaite/Poydras ferry is still running as is the Pointe-a-la-Hache ferry.

Did the Dover to Calais crossing of the English Channel back when I was stationed in Scotland. We had our 2 older kids with us. They had a blast.

Yes.
My buddy and I used to ride the Galveston ferry to pickup girls. The ferry was infested with them coming to the island from Bolivar.

The only time I had reservations about crossing the river on a ferry was after the Luling/Destrehan Ferry disaster in 76 when the George Prince was hit by the cargo ship Frosta while crossing the river.
The entire crew and over 3/4 of the passengers died in that one when the ship rolled the ferry.
After that, I never stayed in my vehicle once it was parked and always watched the river traffic until reaching the landing on the other side.
