I've been afraid to ask. Thanks to this thread, though, I will resume drinking from the water fountain.

I did that in microbiology. Nasty, nasty stuff on those things but it doesn't stop me. There was also nasty stuff cultured off my hands after two minutes scrubbing with soap and hot water.

For HS science fair project I swabbed the water fountain and other commonly used things. We found Staph and other bugs, but by plating alone we were only identifying colony forming units. That means there was no real way to quantify how many actual bacteria were on each surface by exclusively culturing the samples.

Regardless, the school freaked out and got us a new water fountain.

That makes no sense. As if all the microbes couldn't accumulate again fairly quickly.

"How do you drink out of that thing?" I asked what they meant, and my co-worker says, "We did a culture of one and you wouldn't believe what we got." Ever since then, I can't bring myself to get a sip.

Sounds like you aren't smart enough to think for yourself

I would guess the same could be said for the kitchen faucet at home.

I'm really not. Care to make an insinuation that will change my behavior?

This sounds like one of those news lead-ins that are like

"This common household snack that is most likely in your pantry right now COULD KILL YOUR CHILDREN AND POSSIBLY YOU AS WELL.

Tune in at 11 to find out what it is."

Big deal. Culture a toddlers hands at any random time during the day and it would make the water fountain look sterile by comparison.

They heard Staph and water fountain. Never mind that there is Some form of Staph growing ubiquitously all over your body. Most are harmless commensal strains.

I rarely wash my hands after I use the bathroom. Of course I drink out of water fountains.

There's one in the shop where I work. I'm usually the only one there so I have no problems drinking out of it

Not in a long time. There is usually bottled water available.

Would not touch a drop of tap water in Pineville after the screw up of some years ago there when the city utilities workers somehow hooked a sewer line into a water line, and a couple of folks noticed something looking like toilet paper coming out of their kitchen faucets. I think the city finally got all the suits settled on that frick-up.

Yep

Do you get iced drinks in bars and restaurants? I'm sure they are worse
