I was chastised by a few for eating crab claws. They consider the meat in the claws trash meat and they throw those away. I don't like those MD folks.

I grew up in W MD. I could cross a bridge over the Potomac into WV with a 20 min. walk from my home.
The three westernmost counties in MD -- Garrett, Allegany, and (to a degree) Washington -- are more rural and conservative than the rest of the state and probably have more in common with the rest of the South. There are some spots on MD's E shore that are similar in that regard.
The center of the state, where the bulk of its population lies, is basically suburban Baltimore/DC. It's more urban and far more liberal. Even as a kid, I was aware of this dynamic and would never have considered MD a southern state.

Easy answer to an easy question to determine there northerness or southerness. Do they sell sweet tea at every restaurant and do they serve grits with breakfast. If either of these is no, then no they are not southern.
