If it's a place that gives you your card back after opening the tab? I assume they just add the standard tip?? Did this somewhere yesterday not wanting to fight the crowd.

Yes because if the service sucks I'm leaving a 0 in the tip column

Are they allowed to do that? Add a tip? That'd be theft right?

My regular bar(s) I won't and they auto-tip 20% which probably saves me money. I'm a heavy tipper when drinking

Places I don't know well I always close out.

They have signs that say "tabs left open will be charged **% gratuity"

15-20%.

That is very common practice in this modern credit card age. So many people leave their tabs open and leave the bar, if they didn't do this, the bartenders wouldn't make shite for tips.

maybe its denver, but I almost never get my card back.

And I always try to close it out regardless. And in general I try to pay cash at bars. Credit cards and drinking are generally a bad idea.

eta; most of the straight up "bars" I go to, only take cash anyway.

Very weird. I'd say 90% of the bars in Nashville give you your card back.

It's illegal but it's standard practice.

Even if they have a sign that says something like "15% added on all I closed tabs" they aren't allowed to do it. You can just call your credit card company and tell them it wasn't authorized.

In NYC they always keep your card, in my experience. I leave my card open all the time, then close at the end of the night and get my card back. I think it's really weird that this isn't standard practice everywhere.

Probably 99% of the time, no one will cause a stink about it. Who wants to be that guy--got too drunk, left his tab open, and now you're gonna throw a shite fit over a gratuity and stiff the bartender?

It seems like most places in BR hold the card as well.

If I did leave it, I would never bitch about 15-20% gratuity added at the end of the night.

I definitely am guilty of just saying frick it and leaving without closing my tab.

Probably done it more than 100 times now and nothing ridiculous has ever been charged on there.
