Turn on the Uber- talented soul and funk of the 60s and 70s. Listen to Stevie Wonder’s Innervision and the Marvin Gaye’s What’s going on . Listen to some Donnie Hathaway , Otis Redding, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Bill Withers, Isley Brothers, Billy Preston and some Commodores and Earth Wind and Fire. The complexity, the musicianship, the ridiculous talent. And then listen to rap/hip hop.

If you think that it was an upward trajectory and not a denigration of Black popular music, well then I can’t help you. By the way, those guys sang about love, civil rights, brotherhood etc. They truly saw themselves as part of a positive social change.

As for your question, I won’t bash anybody who loves music , even shitty formulaic country , bubblegum pop and bottom feeder rap. Music is essential to a life well-lived. But I would hope people keep listening and push the limits of what they are fed musically to discover the brilliant stuff. And no doubt some small percentage of rap and hip hop stuff is probably brilliant in its own way.

I forgot everyone on the OT has 6 piece ensembles playing swing music for 3 hours at their weddings. Sounds like a blast.

I’ve had much more fun at weddings with bands playing real music than I have at weddings with a DJ blaring a bunch of fricking awful rap music.

It has no redeeming qualities, isn't really what can be classified as music, or lyrics.

Why does it have to be one or the other. I mean we get it. You don't like rap music. But you are clearly going out of your way to state that you haven't heard a certain song at a wedding. Which is pretty bizarre.

Need to bring back Motown and Blues.

Rap music has hurt the black community more than slavery.

It has pretty much ruined an entire generation of urban youths.

I think blaming a music genre for societal ills is pretty pedantic.

Of course. There's nothing better than a good live band at a wedding. That's not the debate here though. The debate is the positive/negative affect of rap music. Not all of it is hardcore murdery shite. My example is one that is played a ton at weddings that most people will have fun and dance to. You haven't and that's great too. That's all I'm saying.

I think the late 80 -90's gangster rap was harmful for society along with the beef between sides and the killing. Not saying they didn't have good beats just saying the overall themes/lifestyles were down right evil. Today rap is more hiphop and borderline pop-ish in nature. They still try to be "hard" lyrically to reflect the genres past but it isn't any different than singing about screwing dead women (one last dance with mary jane) or promotion of drugs (doors, motley crew, etc). Music is just away to escape societies normal limits and new music will always be looked at unfavorably....its the nature of getting older and not relating. Lets be honest teenagers are just dumb, you can't blame the music.

i wish i had more than 1 downvote to give. this is a terrible take- but expected from this demographic. This is a lost cause to change your minds, but you have a narrow minded view of hip hop.

Not all of it talks about raping and murdering as a good thing. i havent heard anyone say that either of those are good things. What i have heard is people saying those those demons do exist in the world and that you must be careful to stay away from it

rap music is great. There are a lot of valuable lessons to be learned from it, if you are listening to the right stuff. I am not a fan of newer rap, but Jay Z, kanye, biggie, pac etc all made great music that can be listened to and not used for clubbing. There are plenty of lessons to be learned from these guys in terms of life lessons and in business

The popular songs that you probably hear are popular for the reason you stated, theyre meant for clubs. Theyre not meant for casual listening while youre just hanging out. Saying that this music is the reason for some youth not behaving correctly makes it seem like the music is the only reason they arent behaving correctly or that they would behave correctly if listening to other forms of music.

Lets not act like rock didnt and doesnt glorify drug use. The lyrics in alot of older rock songs especially are full of drug references. They literally coined the phrase "partying like a rock star" because of the amount of drinking and drugs that were being done by rock bands. How many rock stars have died from a drug overdose?

If you only hear the mainstream stuff thats gets played on the radio and youre judging your entire view of the genre based on that, thats on you. The same media that you bash for clickbait articles and fake news push the music that plays in clubs and on the radio. You should venture away from the herd and listen to the stuff thats meant to be learned from and reform your view

Rap used to be of high quality. It gave great insight into the struggles of urban life and was provocative enough to start a conversation.

Now you can become a rapper to troll and make dank memes.

Tupac rolling over in his grave atm.
