Its fictitious.

It's part of the programming apparatus of the dominant paradigm.

Its safely out of reach.

Through out most of history people have believed in a soul.

Yes I do in a classical Catholic Christian sense.

Even Marcus Aurelious believed in a soul.

As much as I want to, the older I get, the less inclined I am to believe.

God-shaped hole?

That's actually a very profound concept that is often given short shrift. Keller expounds upon it in an accessible fashion in Making Sense of God. I'll to try to summarize later.

Some people have souls, but not everyone. There's no way to know for sure, but the best way to know if someone has a soul is if they were baptized into the Roman Catholic church as an infant.

Im not disagreeing with you but what in your opinion is consciousness?

Consciousness is a function of the brain that allows us to predict the future based upon memories of the past. That's one of our abilities that distinguishes us from every other mammal, even the very large-brained whales, dolphins, chimps and apes, elephants, dogs and wolves, all of which have high levels of intelligence and low levels of consciousness.

Consciousness also allows us to recognize that other people think and reason as we do, the so-called Theory of Mind. This affords us empathy, or the ability to see from another person's perspective.

Our advanced version of consciousness arose from a mutation that allows us to think symbolically. Not only do we think in symbols but we also communicate using sounds as tokens for things and ideas.

This ability to think and communicate symbolically has led humans to science and technology. In turn, science and technology will give rise to artificial intelligence which will have a brain that also incorporates a consciousness function.

Interesting way to think about it. I’m going to assume you think AI could advance to the point that it would be considered to have consciousness? Not just imitate consciousness but actually be self aware.

Yes. A soul is an extension of man’s consciousness.
