It must really frustrate great thinkers to be around folks like us.

I started to write a long response about your definition of "real". And it's just tldr to type & post, so I deleted it, to save you guys.
I was going to explain the pathophysiology of the brain in that what you think is real, really isn't anything more than chemical exchanges between neurons, synapses and nerves. Kind of like drilling in your tooth, you don't actually feel it in your tooth. You feel it in your brain, no matter how real you think it feels in your tooth. Prime example is the pain block the dentists shoots in your gums to prevent the chemical message from ever getting to your brain to be felt.
Same goes for "real" emotional feelings derived from your 5 senses and the chemical exchanges that help you develop the experience of "love" when your child smiles, laughs, cries..If your brain was damaged, you'd never feel "love" or have the ability to receive it.

We know energy cannot be created or destroyed. The big bang that created our universe was created from the original 'energy source', 'god', 'flying spaghetti monster' 'etc' and was ejaculated the universe into existence. So everything that is or will be in this universe, came from this original source. When we die, our bodies will decay and what have yous, but our 'energy', 'soul', 'chi', 'life force', 'etc' will continue to exist. To what capacity consciousness can attain once left the slow, fatty fleshly body, is yet to be seen. But in the end, all of the energy in the universe will re invert back to the original energy source.
One could even look at it as if 'god' got bored with itself and ejaculated out into the void to create the universe with the intent to experience the infinity, through the consciousness of life (plants, animals, aliens, suns, planets, etc).
I get it, this is probably stupid and we should just assume that some old white guy created everything for humans.

In the original post, “believe” is the right word since the notion is nonfalsifiable. It is simply a matter of taste,

thank you for the non-response.
So to be clear, you are holding your position that thoughts and emotions do not exist. Correct? A yes or no will suffice.

Well he intimidated me with "pathophysiology" then convinced me with the dental thing so I'm blowing off church forever. Put me in the heathen camp. He's smart.

As a separate entity, floating around like a spirit in your head, no, they don't exist.
As a product of a chemical exchange ephemerally stored in a neuron/synapse, yes they exist.

Can you distinguish between a child’s belief in Santa Clause existing versus that belief being “real” as you’ve quoted? It’s a pretty big distinction.
And that seems to be the disconnect.
And I just read your response, and it’s silly and semantics. Let’s get down to it. You said “thoughts don’t exist.” And now you see how dumb that is and are now saying “they don’t exist outside your brain.” Well no shite.

Well glad to see you believe it is a function of the brain. We're on the same side then.
Most believe a soul, much like concepts/thoughts/emotions are free floating intangible ethereal entities. But you and I know better.

Yes. You don’t need an explanation when you believe.

If you have to choose to believe... just complex structures in working order dude. All different and some better lol

I'd like to think our brains have some level of metaphysics in them, but it would just be as much of a guess as thinking we don't have one. In our discussion of a soul, what constitutes what is a "soul" and what isn't? Does self-awareness/consciousness have to be present in the soul for it to be considered a soul?
From everything we have learned regarding our physical universe, at least on the macro scale, consensus points toward a physical entity known as a soul not existing. Our current model of reality does not contain the variables or framework for a soul, but said current model(Standard Model) is likely very incomplete. For one thing, it is only explaining part of the story(our 3D world in terms of particles and Einstein's Gen/Special Relativity basically) and doesn't even have answers to many phenomena we can see/detect right now.
My point is that when we start rethinking our understanding and trying to "see behind the curtains of perceptual reality", a soul could definitely be possible. Maybe not how we envision it(maybe a soul is nothing more than some kind of bio/energy signature that is being imprinted at the quantum level) but certainly possible. I do believe that there are more dimensions that physically exist, but perhaps they are extremely small or extremely large, so we have currently have no way of measuring and quantifying.. well besides the huge amount of dark energy that we can't account for but is coming from somewhere.

I've a cat named Alice. She purrs with pleasure and plops down astride me for more when I rub her tummy. We both enjoy this ritual often. Hers is an autonomic reaction. Providing pleasure and celebrating a peaceful, abundant universe makes me happy to my core, which is a soulful, not autonomic, response.
So, frick you positivists.

Not a question on if you are religious or believe in a creator, etc. But do you believe in the concept of a soul? If so, what is it?
I kinda think that this is a religious question.
In any case, I don't know exactly how to answer. I don't even know exactly what a soul would be.

Every human has a soul. 100% The soul separates from the body at the moment of death. The body returns to ashes and dust, but the soul lives until the end of time.
thats so narcissistic
also, since emotions have been proven to originate in the brain as a result of chemicals, what is the point of an emotionless soul? it will just live on forever in a blank state? or does your soul not need a brain? if it doesnt, why was it given one in the first place? why have the brain develop/evolve/go through millions of unnecessary processes to develop emotions that the soul was already capable of?
why would something as powerful as an everylasting soul be overcome so easily by pills such as anti-depressants?

Not really an atheist as much as a pagan warrior and ruler of Rome.
I guess my pint was that many, many people believe in souls. Heck probably more do than don’t through history.
