As long as you aren't being a candy-arse and get back in your car while it's fueling (much bigger issue during the winter when you get into the car to warm up with it running than in the Summer)...it's not a huge safety issue. If you do get back into the car while it's fueling, we probably need to thin you from the gene pool, anyway.

Not a huge deal... just touch something that's grounded when you exit
So...when you touch something that's grounded, you produce a spark to dissipate the static electricity. Yes, you will be further away from the nozzle...but you are still producing a spark while fueling up.

20+ gal tank, 90+ degrees, so it got a little hot for the rest of us(5).
Do the 5 of you know you don't have to stay in the car while it's getting filled up?

Guess how many you would have had if they followed directions of shutting your vehicle off before pumping?
Two. In FORTY YEARS. Wow, a staggering number.

Of course….the risk associated with pumping fuel with the engine running is small, but risk does exist. I don’t know why anyone would take that risk with no potential gain.
Look at a risk matrix.... There is a risk of getting struck by lighting. There is a risk of getting killed in a car accident anytime you drive your vehicle... but you DO drive it, don't you? Because although the end risk may be high, the likely hood is low...statistically, very low. You can apply that same concept to pumping fuel with the vehicle running. It's not about potential gain.

I feel like you'd have a different opinion if it was your gas station that potentially burned down.

Do you know how many spark producing or potentially spark producing (potential ignition sources) there are around that pump?

I spent the latter half of the 80s in northern Maine. Especially, in the winter, no one turned off their vehicle when pumping gas.

Kill the engine and make passengers remove seatbelts.

Two fires that could have easily been prevented. They also could have been deadly burning the entire gas station down...twice... and any customers filling up that day. But no...not a big deal at all.

Any grown men who is concerned about their car getting stolen and scanning the parking lot while pumping gas is an undercover giant pansy.
If we worried about all of the bad things that could hurt us in life with such low probabilities of actually happening. none of us would ever leave the house and we'd walk around the living room in Hazmat suits and crash helmets.
This position is moronic.
If anything, people need to develop more situational awareness. The capacity for identifying and avoiding or mitigating threats doesn't make one a pansy and doesn't mean you have to live scared and never leave your house. It isn't about fear at all.
It is the opposite of that; it is about readiness and competence. Situational awareness goes hand in hand with common sense and problem solving. It's about being a proactive, functional adult that can competently avoid issues or extract yourself from issues without panicking. And it helps you to be more conscientious and considerate of others.
Too many people wander around in their own selfish little bubble, oblivious to the world around them. And based on your shitty take here, you're among them.

Leave it running and blocking a pump; while I drop the kids off at the pool at Buccee’s.

Go ahead and leave the gas can in the bed of your truck while you fill it, too. The completely lazy OT never fails to disappoint.

I haven't turned the vehicle off to pump gas in 15 years or so. The only time I will do so is if I am going into the store for any reason while pumping.
I have the same reasoning about this as I do with putting my cellphone on airplane mode while flying. If there was a real substantial risk, I wouldn't have a choice in doing it or not.

I have never filled up with my engine on. Ever.

Agreed. But, I literally just simply push a button to start and stop the truck. If I turned my truck off when I pumped it certainly wouldn't be some great act proving I'm not lazy. And there are latches on the pump so I don't have to stand there and hold it. I'm going to put them to use while filling up a 30 gallon tank.

Never thought to keep it running. Seems to be doing just fine turning the engine off
