Personally I think it's insane that a kid at 17 can enlist in the Marine corps,
or make an adult decision like vote, get married, get a tattoo, etc and not be able to have a beer

My old roommate said in high school his parents would let him and his friends drink at parties there and force his friends to leave their keys with them. Most spent the night over or have them secure a DD on the ride home.
We had a friend in high school that had parents like this. They let us drink at their house as long as we told our parents where we were and handed over our keys until morning…unless someone else was coming to pick us up.

That was in the 90’s and nobody had issues or got into trouble. But that was before teenagers posted everything in their daily lives on social media.

No. I prefer to be a parent and not their buddy. I’m also not trashy.

Teenagers are gonna drink,

Naive view.

My teenager has never even had a drink of soda, much less alcohol. Of course he made Eagle Scout at 13, so his values and programming are a little different than the average teenager.

Kids pick up habits and behaviors from their parents. If you start handing them drinks when their teens, expect them to think it's OK when they're older.

It was always the other way around, 40 years ago, and my daughters said it was the same now. The kids that were not allowed to drink were the ones that ended up fricking shite faced, doing stupid shite.

Might want to look at American alcohol issues vs Europe alcohol issues and let’s see which place has a better hold on responsible drinking….

France and uk both have lower rates of alcohol related deaths as opposed to the US. And their drinking age is 18….

I'm not really here to debate. Being a parent is a tough job, there's prob no right or wrong answer. My dad let me drink when we were on vacation, but I just would never have been comfortable supplying my children with alcohol as teenagers.

first off - how did he make it so young with the time requirements?
And lol - my husband is an Eagle Scout and he was 22 when we met - I was 17 - I guess his values were different because he’d buy me alcohol (still does )

My 18 year old Eagle Scout drinks, and so does my 17 year old that has one badge left until he makes eagle

I can brag, too.

Sorry, but it's bad parenting to be buying your child alcohol in high school.
They are going to drink whether you buy it or not. The only difference is whether you buy them a couple of seltzers that have 4-5% ABV or they get to the party empty handed and other teens are giving them spiked punch or some other cocktail mixed by the kids themselves where your kid thinks it tastes good but has no clue that 2 of them will have them blackout drunk a little while later.

Not a good idea to buy your teen a bottle of vodka, but if they’re upfront with you about going to a party and wanting to have a little to drink, then I don’t think its a bad idea to buy something like beer or seltzer for them with the stipulation that they don’t take drinks from anyone else and aren’t driving.

I will not allow it when they are old enough just for liability reasons. It is hypocritical given I was drinking/smoking pot in HS. Circle of life kind of thing.

Why would they lie? They’re old enough to buy their own. I personally didn’t drink til I was 27.

Talk about trashy…

I really don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer to this, only responsible and irresponsible answers.

Damn.

I absolutely would not want my kids to behave like I did at 16-18 years old. I was extremely wild and didn't have much supervision. It's amazing that I survived that phase of life relatively unscathed.

My youngest is 18. They went to a bar and had a few drinks and told me about it after, and they had a designated driver. I didn’t freak out. They are going away to college so i know it will happen so i talked to them about moderation and safety. But i don’t give them drinks, mostly because i don’t drink much so i never have any around. But idk, i don’t think i would. It’s one thing to be “cool”-ish about it but i’m not going to supply it. But to each their own, and, as stated, it’s legal.
