Women hate to be upstaged, hate when someone takes or shares the spotlight, and they need something to make them feel better.
Also, for thousands of years if you were thicker as a man it meant you had food and money. If you were ripped with muscles or meant you were a poor field hand.

I will give my opinion:
THe likely enjoy the company of dad bods more, because they are beer drinking every day men. Alot of guys who are in great shape, are huge douchebags (not all). Dad bods have a less % of douchebags
Now, they still inherently want to bang the in shape guys from a pure sex drive standpoint

Most women aren't that concerned with your appearance as long as you are clean cut and not awful looking. They are much more focused on how you make them feel.

Well there are way more guys with dad bods than there are guys that are really fit so the guy they end up with will most likely have a dad bod.

Is it easier for them to say because 95% of society consists of fatties, and they are either fat or married to a fatty or both. They have to say “they like Dad bods” because their boyfriend is probably an insecure fat.
If they’re single, they say they like Dad bods also. This allows them to continue to be a fat without ever having to put down the cheetos and smirnees.

I think they just like a man that is comfortable and secure with himself.
They don't want a fatty, but at the same time don't want an insecure gym rat obsessed with his muscles that shaves his whole body.
They just want a secure guy who is enjoyable to be around and stays in relatively decent shape
