25% of 10% is only an additional 2.5% if you tip on the after tax amount. Not that big of a difference IMO

ETA: using a 25% tip and 10% tax as an example

My issue is with the custom of tipping.

I would rather the cost of someone bringing me my food and keeping my water filled to be included in the overall cost.

no you wouldn't.

bc then you'll just be bitching about why the hamburger and fries cost $15.00.

Sure thing. All these other countries have figured out a way, but it's just not possible in this great nation.

I mean I don't have a family so I guess not. I don't go to places and just order the $50 steak, I'll grab one from Whole foods and make it myself instead.

I would like to think them having a job compels em to be good at it. Do you work as a server? If not, do you expect a tip everyday for doing your job?

There's no difference from a server's perspective opening a $30 bottle of wine vs. a $200 bottle, but one is going to expect a much larger tip.

Precisely. I'll make the adjustment as I see fit and if the waiter cannot appreciate that, I'm sorry.

Sure, but you can make the same example at the same restaurant. Ordering shrimp fajitas and a ribeye shouldn't be any more expensive from a tip standpoint than ordering two hamburgers.

This is actually a valid argument but also it brings the better service to the more expensive restaurants. If you were a decent a waiter/waitress would you want to be at Ruth's Chris or a hole in the wall burger joint.

Well I'm sorry that you don't make enough money to go out to eat. Maybe try going back to school and getting a good career so that you can go out to eat without it being a burden on your finances.

I just don't like the server being turned essentially into a sales agent paid on commission.

When you get paid less than $3/hr you'd understand. If restaurants actually paid waiters a decent hourly wage then your trip to TX Roadhouse would cost twice as much

Bull. shite.

How would your bill double when waiters across the country are obviously okay doing the job for 15% or so of the bill?

My favorites were old men who would tip in cash and then say "don't tell Uncle Sam about this." You bet your arse I'm not claiming cash tips on my taxes.

Ryan, could you tell me which Applebee's location you work at so that I can come in for a meal and not tip you after

Wife and I went out to a nice dinner last night, bill was $97, I tipped $20. I don't think the waitress did $20 worth of work, I assume she has split it with the hostess and bus boy?

But it does seem a big strange that your tip is based off what you spend, not their effort. If we had both gotten salad, it wouldn't have been any less difficult for her, and she would have gotten $15?

I realize restaurants don't pay waiters very much, but I wouldn't hate them jacking up the price of the food and paying their employees more.
